Title: Isabella Liddel Muirhead
Post by: lanarman on Thursday 23 August 18 01:39 BST (UK)
Isabella Liddel McFeat born 1842 Shettleston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Married 1864 to James Muirhead in Shettleston. Isabella died May 10, 1929 Craigs House, Upper Craigs, Stirling, age 87. Widow of James Muirhead, storekeeper. Informant was James Muirhead, son, of 2 Royal Gardens, Stirling.
Trying to find more information on James Muirhead the son.

What info. are you looking for exactly?

When/where was son James born?

Was he an only child or can you give us what info. you have to avoid look-ups on info. you already know?

Does Isabella's DC not give her 'usual address'?

In 1914 - 1925 she was the tenant as Mrs rather than Widow (although I'm unsure if tenants had to give their status) of 2 Royal Gardens i.e. it looks as though son James was living with his widowed mother prior to her death?

All these bits of information you found are new to me. I have the DC from SP and that's all. And yes, Isabella's usual address on the DC was 2 Royal Gardens, Stirling. I came to this point going backwards 5 generations on my tree and picking a sibling of my ancestor and following "down". I know Isabella's Mother's ancestry quite well but didn't know of James Muirhead until recently. So if he was still alive in 1941 then he may have married and had children. It's a long shot but that's whom I'm hoping to find.

As for the Australian connection- Isabella's Uncles and Aunt settled in Mt. Gambier, South Australia in the mid 1800's. Surname- Umpherston. Isabella's parents were Walter McFeat and Jean Umpherston of Cambuslang and then Shettleston. So it appears that young Isabella emigrated there with her husband and son and when James Sr. died she probably went back home to Scotland.

Back to my focal point- James Muirhead- I wonder if he married in Stirling or where would he (and his Mother) be buried?  Thanks to you both for the help.

Thanks Rosie, was waiting to find out what lanarman already had as the YoB helps for finding a death (with age).

Robert Brown Neil of Darnley House Victoria Stirling died 13 December 1940
Confirmation of James Muirhead ,Alexander Turnbull carpet manufactor and John Watts retired millar

I'm a bit confused as to why no mention of James' former employment status when the occs. of Alexander Turnbull & John Watts are mentioned?

There's a few deaths on scotlandspeople but this one looks a good possible?

This will show whether married/widowed with wife's name & m/s as well as both parents names including mother's m/s if the informant knew all those details.

MUIRHEAD JAMES 78
1943
490/ 507 Stirling

Another possible if the above doesn't fit;

MUIRHEAD JAMES 78
1942
479/ 399 Falkirk

The VRs go up in stages of around 10 yrs & James was not at 2 Royal Gardens as a Tenant after his mother's death on the following entry (1930), unles he was a lodger of the Tenant which wouldn't show.
From memory, the new Tenant had a connection to the Military (I think)? I would need to check back on that  :-\

Browsing through a couple of online Stirling directories I found Robert Neil, Mill Manager for Rockvale Mills at 78 Upper Craigs in 1906 and 1909 (not in the 1903 directory). Then Mrs. Muirhead at 2 Royal Gardens in 1909 but not in 1906. So she probably moved to Stirling in those intervening years to be near her daughter.

Online cemetery records seem to be lacking for Stirling. Any suggestions? Thanks again for all the great information Annie and Rosie.

I'm unsure if this is the correct email but if not, once you send a request on the burial (with all info.known) i.e. forename/both maiden & marital surnames/informant of death/date of death/place of death (everything on the DC) I'm sure they will help with your quest (not forgetting to add where you are)...

My interest was piqued as I have Muirheads in my family. I then got excited at the mention of Mt Gambier

My GGG-Grandmother is a Muirhead and lived in Mt Gambier after marrying Charles Blacksell. The Umpherston mentioned left a will and it seems possible Isabell may have recived a bequest.

Trove has a notice , search under ''Umpherston Probate' from 1900 shows a mention of ' nieces and nephews in Scotland. There is also Jane Muirhead and Margaret McLean ( who I believe to be sisters) alongside a W. McFeat

Hope you solve this and has been interesting reading.

Interesting. And now DavidG02's comments have added another dimension to this search. So Isabella Liddel McFeat-Muirhead's line seems to have ended with no descendants.

David G02 has mentioned the 1900 Probate in Australia for a James Umpherston who was Isabella's Uncle. Walter McFeat (MacFeat) was Isabella's brother born June 24, 1844 in Tollcross, Glasgow. I believe from SP that he died in 1928 in Cathcart, Glasgow. I therefore assume that he was the "W. McFeat" mentioned in the 1900 Australian probate record (nephew). The Jane Muirhead mentioned puzzles me as the only Jane is Annie Jane Muirhead, a grand niece. But that is possible.

Isabella and Walter McFeat also had siblings Ann Jackson McFeat born Aug. 14, 1839 in Tollcross and James McFeat born May 13, 1846 in Tollcross.  New avenues to pursue.

Correction to my comment above: Isabella Liddel McFeat-Muirhead's line MAY have continued through her son Walter Muirhead who was possibly married to Margaret Connell. Needs to be explored.

There is quite a bit of reading on the probate record if you have access to Ancestry ..Have never found Walter on any census records so far ..Maybe you should view the marriage on Scotlands People to see if it is him ?

PARIS MYSTERY. BODY OF- LIVERPOOL MAN FOUND IN RIVER SEINE. PARIS. September 23rd. 1909.
It will be remembered that the body of an Englishman, clothed in evening dress, was taken from the River Seine about a fortnight ago. The identity of the body has just been established. It is declared to be that of a retired Liverpool shipowner,- named Walter Muirhead, who was born in Australia. His address in Liverpool is given ' as 1 Drundley (?) avenue and his age as 40.

SOURCE- TROVE Newspaper, Australia (online).

Walter Muirhead born Nov. 4, 1868 in Mt. Gambier, Australia. Emigrated back to Scotland with his Mother and siblings in 1871. Appears in Gorbals, Lanarkshire in 1881 census with Mother and sister/brother. Not found in Scotland in 1891 census or thereafter. I also cannot find a Drundley Ave. in Liverpool. No such name. Perhaps Burnley???

Age is correct and birthplace. ???

Not necessarily him. The Liverpool, England connection doesn't add up in my estimation and I don't have access to the English census for 1900 (if he was there then) or city directories for 1909.  Or French death certificates- I wonder how that works?  There was a French newspaper article that thought his cause of death was suicide. Same details as the Australian newspaper notice. A DC might show who claimed the body and where it was interred. Better yet it could name his next of kin or parents. Wishful thinking.

I found a Brindley Street & Close, Liverpool which may help? May have changed name over the yrs from Avenue to Street or possibly just doesn't exist now?

Maybe a post on the Lancashire board would help?

I wonder if being a Ship Owner did he have a will?

Annie: I took your advice and yesterday emailed the Stirling Council at the address you supplied. And today I received a reply.
Isabella Muirhead was interred in Snowden Cemetery in 1929 and in the same lair lies Robert Brown Neil (1940),  James Muirhead (1943), Annie Neil (1955) and Isabel Neil in Jan. 1967.

I have posted on the Lancashire board in regard to Walter Muirhead.
