Title: Family Bibles
Post by: zetlander on Sunday 26 August 18 17:20 BST (UK)
I think I'm right in saying that Bibles should not be destroyed - they shouldn't be binned or burnt - not sure what can 'rightfully' be done with them - possibly buried - but where?

I think family bibles should be passed on if possible, my father told me when his mother died the family bible disappeared, now all of his siblings are gone it still didn't reappear, it, apparently, had all the family birth dates in it, what a sad loss, I could have done with the info. I suppose if there are no family members left it is a different question

Suppose it depends on your religion but there's no reason why a person can't get rid of or destroy a family Bible.

If it is a bible with family information written in it, it should be kept for the family if possible. If it is an unmarked bible, some people would regard it as sacrilegious to destroy it, but if you have no religious qualms about it, any method of disposal would surely be alright. I would prefer burning if it came to it, and it might do - I have a very large and very battered bible which belonged to my great grandmother, which really needs to be disposed of.

I could not do it,destroy I mean.
Gone are the days when the family bible lived in a Bible Box,those old ones are treasured.
Mine is one we had to have for R,E, at school.
Not very big but I have family dates of marriages and births at the front and deaths at the back.
The pages( end papers) are almost full but at my age there won’t be many more entries.
As W. C. Fields said”At my age flowers make me nervous”. >: ;D ;

We have notes my grandmother was given. It's a handwritten copy of names, dates of birth, dates of death etc for the years between 1814-1908 for people in her mother's family. They may have been copied from a family bible. The dates of birth can't be found in the baptism registers so it points to some kind of family record. Hopefully the original has survived somewhere.

The original question seems to be about bibles in general, no mention of "family" bibles and records. In which case, unless they are a rare edition and have a monetary value then they are just so much scrap paper to be disposed of in an  environmentally friendly way.

Other religions would never destroy or deface their religious texts.
Indeed it is an offence punishable by death to do so by some.
I would not go that far, of course, but the question was what to do with bibles, family or not.
It says something about Christianity that we can dispose of them as we wish
without any trouble.
I seem to remember that in some parts of the world where Christianity is growing, China being one place, bibles are in very short supply.
Don’t know how they could be contacted, from here but there must be a
society who ship them.
Trying to think what good use they could be put to,if big two would make good bookends.
But only one—— no ideas are coming.

A lot of old 'family Bibles' are very heavy, very large and the print is very, very small and difficult to read so donating such old Bibles to needy Christians overseas is often not a practical option.

Why shouldn't they be binned or burnt?

If I had anything like that and no good home to pass it on to think I would give it to the local charity/2nd hand bookshop so that people like us can rummage through and make a discovery!

More likely to have the purchaser rip out the written on pages of family records, leaving the clean pages to be used to write in a new family record producing a family bible for themselves.[ Hopefully a well researched one]
