Title: Salthouse Lane, Hull.
Post by: Towdlass on Monday 27 August 18 16:30 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me pease? I have found out that 4 of my ancestors were living in/at Salthouse Lane, St Mary, Hull in 1841. They were aged 15, 13, 11 and 8. There are no parents listed and there seems to be a whole page full of people with many different surnames but I can't work out what this building was. Did it used to be a workhouse or perhaps a school? Any help gratefully received.

Can you give some names or the census reference? It is not possible to give an answer without seeing the census.

There was Cogan's Charity in Salthouse Lane, according to the 1840 WHite's directory for Hull this was an academy.

I was looking for William Beadling b 1826 in Hull on the 1841 census. Does that help?

It is one building, and there are several households separated by a / across the third line.
HO107; Piece: 1230; Book: 3; Folio: 42; Page: 19.

Just for interest the different households were separated by different symbols in the various censuses.

The household on the census page.
In 1841 the beginning of the first 'family' coincided with the beginning of the house but its end was signified by a single oblique stroke on the dividing line between the houses and names columns. The next 'family' then began, ending with a single stroke unless it happened to be the last household in the house when the end of a house was marked with a double stroke. In 1851 the end of the 'family' was marked by a line across the page, similar to that indicating the end of a house, but only running across part of the second column, as well as the third and fourth. The line for the end of the house ran completely across the first four columns. In addition the beginning of a new household was marked by a new schedule number in the column provided for that purpose. The conventions in the following censuses were a mixture of those of 1841 and 1851. From 1861 onwards oblique strokes were used in the same manner as 1841 but the beginning of each household was also marked by a new schedule number. In 1841 and 1861 the oblique stroke sloped from left to right but this was reversed from 1871 onwards. The 'short line' was only used in 1851.

Oh It was very close to the dock then wasn't it? Stanmapstone I've read the item you posted but my eyes crossed before I got to the end. How complicated that system seems to be. Am I to understand that perhaps each family lived in a different room in the house?

Yes, it was a multi occupancy building. Probably a bit of a slum.

Thanks for that Stan. I reckon that makes sense it being so close to the docks and all. Don't you wish that you could just have a machine which could enable you to see a short snippet of video of the area so you could see the people and get a feel of what it was like? I'll bet it wasn't very nice though. I'm wondering why the children were there on their own?
