Can anyone help with my family? James McAteer lived in Dungannon County of Tyrone. Unconfirmed birth 1820 in Newry. Unconfirmed marriage in 1847 Dungannon Co Tyrone . His daughter Margaret marries William James Lemon 22 Nov 1878 Parish Drumglass Dungannon Co Tyrone. I'd really like to find some concrete evidence on James McAteer. any Direction is appreciated.

from her marriage it states her father James was a carpenter
-
There is a death registered in Dungannon

re:James McAteer is it possible that he could have married x2? i have located children with James listed as Father .i do realize that there is a big possiblility of more than one James McAteer. If i use the Dorothea Fulton/James McAteer marriage date 1852 these children listing a James a father would be too young to marry even by 1800 standards. An earlier marriage of James McAteer and Anne Miller 1847 makes more sense ie.Samuel Mcateer(father James) m. MaryAnn Lucas 11 July 1865.
i think my big question is how do you isolate your specific relation. thank you in advance
-
we do not know how old he was when he married so possibly he could have been married twice and then died long before his second wife
-
James McAteer who died Dungannon
4/8/1864 a married man was aged 77 years
-
How did I know you would have an answer.
Without concrete data, is it incorrect at this stage to use his age at death and probability of 2 marriages to move forward? As a beginner, I experience getting stuck on certain individuals because unable to verify all details.
again thanks

Just a little snippet probably no connection,
Freemans Journal,Friday July 24th 1846
Summer Assizes,Tyrone
Wm Gibson,James McAteer and David Kelly, the three orangemen commited by Judge Torrens at the last assizes, where then placed in the dock and indicted for assembling and commiting a riot on the 18th of August last in Loughgilly Wood
they were found not guilty as the main witness,to the charges had gone to America
-
Fulton marriages

Love Snippets don't we!
no family is complete without these events
cheers
-
it all helps to build a bigger picture,so do you think Mary Jane could be your James sister
-
Simply Yes. Mary Jane is a common name in my tree. James children(yet to confirm) Matilda, Margaret
Samuel and William were the very names Daughter Margaret(married William James Lemon) gave to her children. Dorothea Matilda, Mary Jane, Samuel and William James. Jackpot!
-
Looking over this information -I have a question about James McAteer. Using birth 1787, marriage 1847 and death 1864. James to be married first time at age 60? Perhaps a piece is missing?
-
Samuel McAteer, father James a farmer ,married Mary Gilkinson
children
Matilda,14/10/1880
James,20/11/1884
Samuel 10/08/1887
Jane 10/01/1890
-
yes I think so as well that is possibly not him so we have to continue to look for his death before 1901
-
if I return to marriage of Margaret McAteer to William James Lemon-Margaret's father listed as carpenter.
is it your opinion that if I choose to look for James' father William that I might develop a better timeline?
-
10/09/1891
Mary McAteer, aged 90 years, widow of farmer, death registered by her son William James McAteer
12/2/1883,
aged 70 ,William McAteer, farmer married death registered by son William James McAteer
no further information on this William James McAteer
-
Yes we need to find James father and of course his possible baptism
there are quite a few McAteers in Dungannon, they may or may not be related,
Griffith land tax records do record a William in the area in the 1850's
-
Wonderful Radcliff. I have had some luck not much with Baptisms. I have sought LDS online with some success. My experience with co Tyrone records is sketchy. Perhaps contacting the churches is a better option.
do you know if individuals nowadays use this as a source?
-
Proni is possibly your best route for th church records
-
I have to say I have never researched in Tyrone before but I have enjoyed helping you on your way
-
To think that strangers would assist to the degree you and your partners have I am grateful.Initially I was unsure of asking people for their time and expertise in my personal research. I shall continue on course more prepared than I ever thought.
Thanks for the guidance Radcliff
-
whilst looking around I spotted this book, and thought you might like to get a copy if you can on loan from a library as the only one coming up for sale on Amazon is £109.00
Guide to sources for researching McAteer families in Ireland ,by Shane McAteer and Brian Trainor
-
Going back through all the snippets I have concerns about the age of Dorothea in the census and at her death,as surely she could not have been seven years old when she married James McAteer
-
I shall look into the book.
re: Dorothea I am certain of a connection. if I may...
My grandmother is a Dorothea, her mother a Mary Jane(her sister a Matilda Dorothea , her brother a William James)
Dorothea's grandmother Margaret McAteer Lemon. You have found missing pieces. I am sure they all fit just how
cheers
-
have you access to A****try
I noted there are a few tree's with Dorothea in as a half sister to Nancy William Mary children of Hugh Fulton birth date circa 1832
-
thanks-you are a gem
