I am trying to find out what school my father went to as a boy from around 1916 if he attended at 5 years of age. I am assuming he went to the same school as me as he lived in the same house as a child. Could someone point me in the right direction to find the school log books of Slater Street School as I'm not sure if the school or a record office would have them. Many thanks. (I might add I do not live in Leicester now so am not local to finding these records.)

If I've read it correctly, Leicestershire Records Office have the Slater Street School admission registers - 1874-1988.

Thank you BumbleB. It is interesting that St. Leonards School also have records which was a place that didn't cross my mind although I knew it had existed as I used to sing in the choir at the actual church, so worth considering as an alternative. I am annoyed that I never asked my father what schools he went to when he was alive! ::)

Thank you J Allen for bringing up the topic of slater street. I cannot help you with the school but this does resurrect childhood memories a maiden aunt of mine worked in a factory on slater street as canteen manageress during the 1950 s she was still employed there when she passed away in 1962 at the age of 68.She commuted by midland red from coalville daily . She was one of the many single ladies of that generation her "sweetheart" did not make it back from france in 1917.

A very sad story robinswh and like so many of that generation whose men went to war and never returned. I had a great aunt in the same situation who never met anyone else. It's as if they carry a torch for their beloved for the rest of their lives. :'(

If you are happy to post his name, I can have a look at the refs I have which will make a trip to the records office easier :)

Many thanks for this information, it is much appreciated. He won a scholarship to Art College at 14, but sadly his mother wanted him out working to bring money into the house so his talents were never realised.

Not unlike my grandad, his paintings were beautiful but his parents couldn't afford to send him to art school as the eldest brother was sent to Theological College.

It is so sad to read how past generations were thwarted in their ambitions. My father painted beautiful pictures and quite breathtaking charcoal sketches when he was 11. When he left school at 14 he went to a yarn dying factory and because of his artistic flair was sent to their laboratories to mix dye colours! I suppose it was a bit better than working on the factory floor and he worked there all his life.
