Hi all, I think this is my first post on Rootschat, so hope I’m doing this right.
Am getting back into searching on my grandfather, Robert James Shepherd born in 1910 in Bootle, Lancashire.
He originally enlisted in 1933 with the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
I now understand that whilst he spent time in Egypt, he also was with/in the Chindits in Burma.
I have his service number.
What would my best steps to take to get some info on his time with the Chindits? Would it be ordering his service records, is that the Veterans Dept or is there a area to go to with Chindits service information?
I’m going to have google some info on The Chindits to get a much better understanding of this unit. I now they were a specialist unit, but I don’t have a detailed knowledge of their day to day, week to week dealings, but I do know it was a trecherous experience.
Guess I’m just asking for the best place to start my next stage of research for my grand dad’s service with the Chindits.
Thank you very much.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. :)
You have mistakenly posted on the 'How to.....' Board so I have asked a moderator to move this to the Armed Forces board.

Welcome to Rootschat.
I would advise starting by ordering his records and work from there.
https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records
You can follow them up with general information from a Google search, you will then know what specific questions you need answers to.
Good luck.

Thank you Jebber.
I will order his records as you suggested and start this new bit of research on my grandfather. and will read up on his particular battles/works with the Chindits.
Kind regards
Dawn

Dawn, My dad was in the Leicesters & was also a Chindit but there's not much in his service record, only, "attached to special. forces" that's it, no other information, hope you have better luck.

Ohhh that’s a bit disappointing. I’ll still give it a shot, but I guess I can keep in my mind that there may not be much info in the records.

Better read this, it's quite informative.

Thank you for the link Regorian - I will definitely be taking a look at that... I might just sneak a look now (whilst I'm at work!).
