I would be grateful if somebody could confirm the death of James McLachlan in 1835. He was a weaver in Buchlyvie, Stirlingshire and I believe there were other relations of his living in the area at that time. Help would be appreciated. Grossan

Where did you get 1835 from as his year of death?
Have you checked Scotlands People? There’s an 1831 death aged 35 shown as McLachlan but as you haven’t given any birthyear it’s impossible to know if it’s the right one.

I have a copy of his will (Reference SC67/36/16 Stirling Sheriff Court) in which it states that he died on the 23rd May 1835 I do not know his date of birth or how old he was at death which is why I am trying to get his details. I have tried Scotlandspeople to no avail. I am sure he is one of my ancestors as I have his name (but no dates) on a partial family tree found in my great grandfather,s bible, along with some of the other McLachlan people named in James’ will. They clarify where the year of death came from but unfortunately don’t help to find a record of his death
What date did he actually make his will

Was it not obligatory to register a death in 1835 in Scotland?

As far as I know all deaths had to be registered before a burial could take place even in 1835 but I may be wrong.
Using SP I just searched on all deaths with a christian name James in Stirling in 1835 and it showed 61 results under the OPR's
There were 11 M*cClachlan or McLachlan deaths in other parts of Scotland that year but none in Stirling.

Carole - the preamble to the document I have concerning the will - (Stirling Sheriff Court) starts 11/08/1835 MacLachlane, James ( you will notice a variation of the spelling) but throughout the document the surname is spelt variously and I do wonder if the writer just wrote what he thought he heard as dictated to him. I am at a loss now as you say there are no deaths recorded in Stirling for 1835 Maybe I have to try different spellings?
