The Brothers family from NSW arrived in Bay of Islands around 1839/1840 with one daughter born
in NSW. The family returned to Sydney in April 1845 accompanied by 4 children, 2 sons and
2 daughters. Would like to locate the births of the children in NZ and identify them. Have checked
the historical BDM's NZ online without result perhaps because the births are pre-registration.
Familysearch also had a negative result.
My question is: Can anyone suggest other places I could look to find these births please?
There are trees on Ancestry for this family with variable dates but would like to
see if there are any NZ records.
Regards,
Jen.

BDM microfiche have some records 1840-1854 but no sign of Brothers surname there.

You are correct, that is pre-registration
I haven't had occasion to delve back that far in NZ and others will know better than me, but I would look for diaries and letters relating to the place and period hoping that someone mentions your family. It's an important period in NZ history so I think archives will be well catalogued - somewhere

Thankyou John B for checking the BDM microfiche.
Thanks also Mckha489 for your suggestions and links, will check those carefully.
Being from Aust. I am finding the Maori names confusing but think Kororareka or Russell BOI is
the area of interest. I note there was a Church of Christ established there and perhaps records
may still exist for that time. Although the family was not this denomination, if it was the only church
then perhaps children would have been baptised there.

Kororareka/Russell was the first capital of NZ
the Treaty of Waitangi was signed there on 6 Feb 1840.
If your dates are correct they may well have been in the crowd at the signing.
there were French Catholics there too. Bishop Pompallier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Baptiste_Pompallier

MAYBE this is the arrival of some boxes for the Brothers.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZGWS18410918.2.4?end_date=31-12-1845&page=7&query=brothers&start_date=01-01-1839
does the name Greenwood mean anything to you?
here they are again
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZGWS18420101.2.4.2?end_date=31-12-1845&page=10&query=brothers&start_date=01-01-1839
its tricky with Brothers being the name, but there is a comma between Greenwood and Brothers, so I don't think its Greenwood brothers.
and not only that there is a ship called the Brothers, and another called the Three Brothers! Although the latter seems to operate between Wellington and Picton (Queen Charlotte Sound)

OH HERES A GOOD ONE, quite long, includes
"Another party of Natives went to the jail at Hokaito (called by Governor Hobson, Russell Town) plundered Hore and Brother (the jailors) of everything they possessed threatening to shoot them if they made the least resistance, and shewing them that their muskets were loaded. Two or three of them entered the house of Brothers completely naked, one of them made use of infamously indecent language to Mrs Brothers , at the same time shaking a tomahawk at her, and shewing her his private parts"

Well Found Mckha489,
I am following the thread with keen interest. I am absolutely sure these will be of interest to Jen.
ADD
If she has not found those Archives, is there still an RChatter who may be able to visit the archives to take photos of the files perhaps?
:)
JM (NSW centric, very interested in the pre 1850s era)

FYI for your own searches
I have come across both KORORAREKA and KORORARIKA
also JAIL and GAOL
-
Thankyou so much Mckha489 for all your work on my behalf. ;D I did find the article on Papers Past
re the attack by natives, sounds quite terrifying for Mrs. Brothers. I assumed that may have been
the reason for the return home but the Colonial Secretary's papers seem to confirm the dismissal
of Brothers. In the light of events in March 1845 in BOI their return to Aust. was fortuitous.
No, Greenwood has no connection to the family and yes the surname is difficult to search as you have found Mckha! ::)
Your link to the French Catholic fathers in Russell is relevant as the family was Catholic, this
is another avenue for research.
The archive results are of great interest, particularly his dismissal from the gaol and his deposition
re the native robbery. I would like to read their content but it appears that no copying costs are available for these records.
Thanks again,
Jen.

Thankyou for your continued interest JM :D this search for births/baptisms will not be an easy one,
I note there is a museum in Russell, perhaps contact with them may shed some light on the
possibility of church records for the timeframe 1840-1845.

Jen.

I think if you start a new topic “NZ Archives look up” and post the link to those docs someone might be able to go and look at them for you. I think paying for copies is likely to be expensive

Hello Janette, The items of interest were found on Archway online index to N.Z. Govt. archives
record series 8333, for Johnstone/Johnson Brothers c.1840-1982.
They are Colonial Secretary's inward correspondence from Russell, Bay of Islands
1844. The records I would like to read are attached below with details of the record.
Regards,
Jen.

There is also

I think they’re all in the same box

Thanks Mckha for your advice re Archives look-up and also your link to J. Brothers' replacement,
much appreciated.
Have also noted on the NZ BMD website - that Births, Deaths and Marriages were originally part
of the Colonial Secretary's Office. Do you know if any of these records would have survived and if
so where to find them? ???
Regards,
Jen.
-
No idea. Hopefully someone else does

Thanks for your reply Mckha. :D

Hello Jen
For your information. The largest collection of old records is held by our [NZ] national archives, spread over several branches, in our main centers and at Wellington. The catalogue listing for them can be found by using the online ARCHWAY address as exampled above in a couple of links.
If you would like a resident RC member to look them up for you, it is important to know which branch of the archives they are held. So the above request was to see if they were held at either Auckland or Wellington; the most likely ones for historic Bay of Islands records. Of that period others can be found in Australian archives until the hand over.
A separate [new post] WELLINGTON or AUCKLAND Archives LOOK UP request, might get the likes of myself or spades offering to have a look see when next passing the archive.
You also have the possibility of local museums, and churches OR their NZ headquarters and archives holding historic records, not held in the National Archives system.
Regards,
Alan.

Hi Jen,
No need to start a separate thread, I have PMed Spades to hop on board, will be easier for him to follow the thread, so he knows what he is searching for at Archives.

Hello Alan and KHP, I am overwhelmed with the generosity of NZ Rchatters and your willingness
to help me negotiate the labyrinth of NZ records ;D Received some great
help yesterday as well.
Thanks Alan for your info. re the old records collection in NZ archives
and suggestions for other possible sources. Have sent an email to the museum
in Russell and hope to locate a Historical Society - someone may be able to
enlighten me re Church records.
KHP I greatly appreciate your help with the archive material and the PM to
Spades ;D It is so much more than I expected :D
Thanks to all
Jen.

I can look for those Wellington files.
Thanks for alerting me to this, KHP. :) :) 8)

Another archive that you can look up on line, is the Alexander Turnbull library which holds copies of all NZ publications [books & bulletins] and many other items. It is the Government's library.
But I'm not famaliar with any search options, to eliminate references to all the newspapers hits I have directly obtained from Papers Past. Today I found some 1860's correspondence, and a school publication reference, that I had not found in my usual go to places.
Alan.

Hello Spades, Thankyou for your very kind offer to look for the archive files, much
appreciated ;D ;D
Apologies for the delay in response, have not been able to log on to
Rchat NZ this morning, must be a large volume of Rchatters online!
Kind regards,
Jen.

Alan, Thankyou for your info. on Alexander Turnbull Library, will take a look at that :D
