I am following a ship around via Lloyds list and newspapers.
It has been back and forth to Bombay and Madras with a few other recognisable places in between but on 31 Jan 1831 it arrived back at Bombay from CRANCHEY.
Any ideas where that might be?

Maybe Karachi...it could sound similar to someone unfamiliar with the place names?

Thanks dj, that was my thought too, although the N?

Could it be Kranji (in Singapore)?

Oh, yes, Phillip, it could. I like that better.
I have the ship in Singapore 11 months earlier.
Although a Royal Navy Vessel it seems to have been involved in East India Company business when a bit of extra clout was needed. (although I believe it is just as likely to be the other way around!)

Happy to help!
Pure fluke - I read your post then a few hours later I was researching a WW2 Prisoner Of War when the place name Kranji leapt off the page and shouted "Look at Meeeee!" at me.
Sometimes, luck plays a part and leads to a result. :) :)

I like the singapore suggestion but when i mentioned the query my husband promptly suggested karachi.

well, for lack of further evidence as yet, I will have to offer both alternatives in my narrative.
I hope eventually to see the log book, which is at National Archives, but that will have to wait quite a while.
