Are you not watching?
I expect a heated discussion tomorrow.
-
Not THE Alan Bradley? Didn't he get run over by a Blackpool tram 25 years ago?
Martin

No this one is Andrew and still going (strong?)
-
I saw the tail end of it.
-
yes I saw it, a couple of small interesting bits but on the whole would n't watch it again. Plugging ethnicity again.
-
Please explain what you are talking about. Corrie is not screening on free to air here, nor has it been for a number of years.
Are the cast not really Northern? Are they faking it. Whose baby storyline?
DNA testing ???

I quite enjoyed it!
My family flagged it up for me as my dream programme! Coronation Street and Genealogy! 8)

Well......that's 15 minutes of my life that I won't get back. Not impressed. ::)

I have not watched it yet and cannot make up my mind if I will :-\
Coronation Street is not one that I follow but wonder if it might be interesting :-X
Do you think it might rival Who Do You Think You Are ???

I don't watch Coronation Street but I thought I'd give this one a go. Like other genealogy programmes it was rather 'light' on the nuts and bolts of research.
There were three main aspects to the research: ethnicity (which I wish hadn't been such a big thing), finding cast members who were cousin-matches to fans of the show and introducing them to each other, and, for - I think - 3 people, a little more family tree digging. Only the latter part was properly interesting for me.
Overall I'd class it as what my husband calls 'visual chewing gum' - good enough to keep watching but not worth a rave review.
-
I'm with Kooky on this one and enjoyed it, especially the part about Paddy Wallace (Jude Appleton) and his delight at being almost 100% Irish and his journey back to the Island where his Nan was born and family members still lived nearby.

Is crediting Kim Marsh's 8% Iberian DNA back 16,000 years to early immigrants credible?

That was my thought as well. Surely 8% would give you a relative closer than 16000years ago. I also thought they skimmed over the Scandanavian/Viking element and were selective in how they presented it. Connie Hyde had 38% Scandanavian ethnicity, but they failed to mention (or at least I didn't hear it) that her mother is Danish.
-
oh well lets hope those of us who done dna get a few more matches out of it but they'll probably do it for ethnicity and not have a tree!

I have just watched it and quite enjoyed it. I haven’t watched the programme for years so only recognised the ‘older’ actors.
I too enjoyed Paddy Wallace’s Irish journey. The majority of my matches and shared matches are linked to a particular area of Ireland.
I have 7% Iberian ancestry so was interested in the explanation - the Armada stories being discounted but as ABradley writes 16,000 years seems a bit distant for my dad’s dark looks. :)
I just think it was a lighthearted look at DNA and just added to my view of it being magical.

The first settlers in Ireland were Iberian. Still a lot of Iberian DNA to be found in Ireland particularly the further west you go, so no surprise seeing it show up.
-
We have to remember that this was not a serious genealogical programme ;)

Yes that is what I thought. The actress’s was Cornish which was explained as post Ice Age settlers.

The delivery of the outcomes was delivered though as facts so although a bit of a light hearted programme - finding relatives and showing Ancestry DNA maps; I think would convince fans of the series that it might be worth having a test.
Presumably Ancestry had an interest in the programme too.

I watched it last night
and it was FUN
something I dont do a lot of lately
So enjoyed it.
especially Paddy.
Dont watch Coronation Street.. or any soap -- cant be tied to needing to keep up with a prog.
But in the middle of the night and not able to sleep it was fun.

Are there further episodes?

Does anyone know what company did the DNA tests? The main reason I would ever get one done is to find out if it can pinpoint where one of my Irish lines came from. I know where some of the other Irish lines came from so if a new place came up it could be a lead. I suppose Paddy's results are very rare. You would have to come from a very remote part of Ireland to be that specific.

The test indicated areas of the UK such as "Northern England", so possibly LivingDNA.
I was surprised not to see any actual product placement.
-
Well there was NO direct product placement..
but if you watch the prog where the chap and Davina find long lost rellies.. that seems that Ancestry has a big hand in that now... it is mentioned when searching.. quite a bit.
So if you ask me its the same chap doing this show and that one.. And I am not being ignorant.. but I just forgotten his name.. sorry..
ah.. .hang on now I ve said it I remember Nick Campbell.
thats the one.

I watch Corrie and have met some of the cast when in Manchester 5 years ago. I too enjoyed the programme. I have heard that certain parts of Ireland had very little migration to it and often people married into families but I think this is quite rare. I am sure that Ireland is a land of immigrants as well such as Ulster Scots, English, Welsh, Celtic etc as well as Iberian.
It is encouraging me to have my DNA done.
