Hi
I am unfamiliar with searching UK records as I live in Australia.
My ancestor, James Spedding, was born in Cumberland in about 1816, married Isabella Story (or Storey) and had 3 children, Mary Ann, William and John. Isabellla died and then James remarried to Jane Steel, a widow with one dauhter, Hannah. After the birth of a son John, they migrated to Australia on the ship Persia, arriving in 1854.
I have information about their lives in Australia, but would like to know anything about the area that they came from.
I am descended from William Spedding, and have a bible that he bought with him. (Not a family bible, just a regular one). There is the following inscription in the front:
James Spedding
Mosedale 1241
Cumberland
May First Day
A google search has lead me to think that gifts were given on May Day. Is this correct?
Is the above an actual address that perhaps still exists?
The purpose of my query is to find out about the location, as much as family details.
I am hoping to travel to the UK in a couple of years and walk the streets that my ancestors walked, visit their churches, cemeteries, etc.
Any information that you could give me would be much appreciated.
Regards
Jennaya

Isabella died Dec qtr 1848 aged 29 - death registered Whitehaven
The remarriage to Jane Steel was Sept qtr 1850 Whitehaven
In 1841 they were living in Mosedale, Caldbeck in the Penrith RD - no children. Marriage Sept qtr 1840 Cockermouth
In 1851 there is a Hannah but her surname appears to be Williamson and she is 5yrs old. The family are in Cleator Village plus the 2 children born before Isabella's death
Freebmd has a Hannah Steele b March qtr 1846 - no mmn shown so presumably illegitimate
James was a blacksmith and his birthplace looks like Dean
If you Google the various place names above you will get further info

Thanks for this information. Hannah Williamson is the name that I have for her, so it looks like the correct Hannah.
Is there any way of finding out where the burials are? And also what denomination the family was? I'm fairly certain they were of a protestant denomination.

I hope you plan to hire a car Jennaya.
Mosedale is a tiny little place in a beautiful part of the world. You will love it.

Have a virtual drive through on google street view. It is stunning - Mosedale is a hamlet comprising only a few cottages. I would never have left there and gone to Australia (though they would not have known what was in store) ;) :)
You can see a burial ground on the map. Assuming the family lived in the area for a while some of them may be buried there, though they could have been buried in a neighbouring village.

The side by side maps are fairly wonderful. :)

Can you scan this image please...presentation can often be useful to see. Are there any other written notes in the bible....loose pages with writing?
James Spedding
Mosedale 1241

It is possible that the number 1241 is the year 1841.
Wivenhoe's idea about a scan of the writing is a good one.

Thanks for your all your replies, just got home from work and have to go out again soon.
I will have a closer look at your replies tomorrow. Will try to upload a copy of the inscription, 1841 could be correct.
