Title: 1 Harding Street Swindon
Post by: Milliepede on Friday 07 September 18 22:06 BST (UK)
Does anyone have local knowledge of this property please?

My great greats were listed there in 1871 and 1875.

Some years ago I went looking for the address and it seemed to be on a corner wrapping round to East Street  -  part of a Club of some kind but looked unoccupied.

Would be interested to know if it was one large property or split into rooms etc if anyone remembers it being an occupied building.

Many thanks for any info.

1886 Town Plan, Swindon - with house numbers.

I checked the 1911 Census which gives the no. of rooms of each household.

Duncan & Mandy's website has a couple of views of that end of Harding street as it is now, not much of the original left though. http://www.oodwooc.co.uk/web_places/swindon/ph_sw_railv-1.htm

Thank you for replies.

The 1886 map is interesting as it says "bakery" on the corner and the entry I found for 1875 described my great great as a baker - the first time I had seen that occupation attributed to him as he was a railway fitter and seems to have done a bit of brewing as well.

The boarded up photo was as it was when I saw it several years ago.  I fear it may be no longer there but will try and get along in person and have a nose.

I'm afraid hanes teleulu's link takes me to a modern map, the large building [bakery] is modern. In 1886 the buildings fronted onto East St, and Harding St, started in from the corner of the junction. I cannot remember the numbering system for Harding St, but the RNA building/house could well have been number one. It is still there although not like I remember it.

[ Just checked and number 24 was on the right hand side looking towards East St,]

That link takes me to the 1957 1/1250 plan with the house numbers. The 1886 Town Plan does not have house numbers.

Well, that is strange, the 1957 map shows the numbers on th opposite side of the road to what I remember them to be
