trying to locate details of a jacob james forden who according to his australian ww1 service record was born in wilne derby. his birth would be around 1875. i can pick up details of him from 1901 but nothing before. cheers
-
Where did you find him in 1901?
-
Homer, did Jacob marry or die in Australia (these certificates should name his parents), or was he a war casualty?
Freebmd is not showing any births at all for anyone called Jacob Forden.
Trove has mention of a James Jacob Forden keeping an illegal gaming house in WA in 1934 - it's not the same Mr Forden by any chance is it?
-
Nothing in the GRO either. There is a marriage in 1901 Perth, Western Australia to Amy L Cole. There is also a military record for a Jacob James b 1877, wife Amy.
-
That must be Homer's 1901 mention of Jacob.
Nothing for a James Forden around the right time in Freebmd either.
-
Do you know when Jacob came to Australia? I can't see any Jacob Fordens in the 1881 or 91 census. There are a few James but none born around the right time in Derbyshire.
Apart from his service record do you have any other documentation which confirms his year and place of birth?

I wonder if this Jacob Floden might be relevant - born Wilne - listed as Foden on FreeBMD https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27K-GMJG

I think you might have something there Kay. :) Jacob's marriage or d/c should confirm parent's names.
-
It is FODEN on the 1881 census as well. FLODEN is an error - there is no L but the flourish on the cross stroke of the F makes it look a little like an FL.
I'm sure that must be him Kay. :)
-
Unusual surname Foden - centered around a small area:
http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=FODEN&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=name
Presumably it is pronounced Forden, hence the later addition of the r.
-
They are in the 1871 census as Foder on Ancestry. (with some more children)
In 1861 William and Selina must be recently married (they have no children with them). Surname is Foden.
-
The family seem to disappear post 1881 :-\
-
I wonder if they went to Australia as a family.

i have plenty of info after 1901 in the name forden which all ties in what i know
its the dates prior to that
have not found a jacob forden on the shipping lists into fremantle but some of the other names which you all have suggested will be a great start
great work everybody
-
on the perth cemetery records
jacob james forden died age 68 in 1946
john TITUS forden died age 85 in 1956
-
If William Forden and Selina Cotton are Jacobs parents then Jacob was one of 8 children.
Familysearch LB4K-B1V
-
Selina Cotton is rather confusing but there is a marriage of a William Foden to Selina Elizabeth Neill in Dec Qtr 1857 7b 728 which may be the correct one
I think Selina was born pre her parents marriage and registered as Selina Cotton with no mothers maiden name in 1839 then is listed in 1841 in Ockbrook, Derbyshire as Elizabeth Neale with James and Eizabeth Neale nee Cotton. Then is 1851 as Selina Cotton - stepdaughter? of her grandparents Joseph and Jane Ufton
-
William and Selina's first child, Mary H Forden was born 1862 Borrowash, Derbyshire. Familysearch again, caution!
-
There is a possible earlier child from the GRO Birth Index
ELIZABETH FODEN Mothers maiden name COTTON
GRO Ref: 1858 Sept Qrtr SHARDLOW Vol 07B Page 335
And from the GRO Index a possible death age 1 of an Elizabeth Foden in 1859 June Qrtr SHARDLOW Vol 07B Page 241

Kay found their immigration at reply #13 and #14. Unless the other children came at different times, they must have left a few behind. Looking on the censuses there are a lot of children but I didn't think to count them.
