I along with other people with connections to the Herefordshire Lovetts are trying to trace my 3x ggrandmother who was French.
all we know about her is that she was called Clotilde we do not have a surname she married George Lovett from Hertfordshire, her death certificate shows she died in Hemel Hempstead and from her age at death we worked out she was born about 1802 in or around Calais in France, does anyone know anything or where to find french records my problem i myself do not understand or speak french, so would need a site that would translate into English.
With her first two sons being born in Calais they must have married their, they must have returned to England after the birth of Thomas my 2x ggrandfather because their other children were born in England.
Been trying without success for many years to break this brick wall.

Could you give us the birth year of the eldest child? This would help to narrow down the search.

What does her death certificate say exactly?
Without her maiden name, it will be difficult to find out more.
-
I think that I found her.
In Audruicq, Pas de Calais https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audruicq
Her maiden name is MARCANT
Their son Louis Thomas LOVETT was born in 1820 in Audruicq

Born on April 10th, 1820
The father George LOVETT is 28 years old. He is a domestic of Mister COLLET.
The mother is Clotilde MARCANT.
The record mentions a marriage in the village of Tilques

You star! If tacor1 can give the names of the children born in France it would help tie down a potential year for the marriage.

My French is terribly rusty, but I can see that in 1818 George was 28 and a soldier. So he might turn up on the Waterloo medal rolls. This is getting interesting.
(I do like BMD documents which give a wealth of information).

Allowing for spelling errors on the original document, I'd go for Streatham, Surrey, and Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
You, davidqueneherve, are awesome!

So he might turn up on the Waterloo medal rolls.
And we have a probable on the Waterloo medal roll:
Private George Lovett, Royal Wagon Train.

I can't find a death record for Florence DUFRENE.
There is a death record on January 13th 1812 in Tilques in the name of Marie Corentine Florentine DUFRESNE, 40 years old, wife Jacques Joseph DUCROCQ, 38 years old.
She died the day before.
She was a native of Aix-en-Ergny.
Daughter of the late Noël DUFRESNE and the late Marie Antoinette MATOREL

Marie Catherine Florentine DUFRESNE married Jacques Joseph DUCROCQ, a widower, in Tilques on January 17th 1810.
According to her marriage record, she was born on February 22th, 1772 in Aix-en-Ergny.
No proof so far, that she is the same as Florence DUFRENE.
Her widower remarried in 1812 with Marie Jacqueline Françoise HOYEZ. In the marriage record (26/10/1812), his former wife is mentioned as the late Florentine Joseph DUFRESNE.
We can assume that her given name was Florentine.
She gave birth to a son, Jean Baptiste DUCROCQ around 1810

I am one of the people searching for the elusive Clotilde and her family. Thank you all for your research and particularly tancort who started with questions. I’m grateful to the two people who have gone to the trouble of researching the query.
Clotilde is my GGGrandmother.
Q1. I am wondering how we can now obtain copies of the marriage certificate and the birth certificates of their children in France. They had two more children in France and then 3 more in England.
Q2. I’m also wondering how we could get birth/death certificates for Clotilde’s parents?
Q3. I’m also wondering why Clotilde would be Claudine on her marriage certificate to George and then ‘Clotilde’ in other records?
This has been a brick wall for our family for so long - we had almost given up!
Thanks to all for assistance.

Q1 Follow the links given in the previous posts or use this one http://www.archivespasdecalais.fr/Archives-en-ligne/Histoire-d-une-personne/Etat-civil and search for the records
Q2 Read the previous posts
Q3 We can't know for sure. The two given names sound alike and she probably liked Clotilde better.

I am going back to an old subject of my Lovett relations, but as you found the answer to my brick wall about the marriage of George Lovett and the french connection, i was wonder if anyone can find a birth date for my 2x ggrandfather Thomas born in Calais in about 1826, thought when i found his death in Colne Lancashire it might have given me his date of birth, but it doesn't.
father George Lovett mother Claudine Josephe Marquant

Given the other places associated with this family, Saint-Omer seemed a likely place to find more, and I found these records there:
16 June 1823 (number 389) - a stillborn child:
https://archivesenligne.pasdecalais.fr/v2/ad62/visualiseur/etat_civil.html?id=339077538
3 May 1825 (number 292) - a son George Thomas (probably your 2xgg):

Thanks for your information

You may not be aware, but since your initial post 4 years ago, the website www.myheritage.com added something like 480 million French records to their database at the end of last year.
It has made searching for French ancestry so much easier.
You might like to have a look.

thanks will take a look at that
