But umm...  I was suggesting that a summary of the English aspects could be placed on the general England board (add in a new thread), with reference back to the live link I have included in this post.

You see, Michael DONOVAN is the person named as father of John DONOVAN who died in South Australia in 1910.  In the Obituary for that John Donovan, there's mention he was an Englishman.

Here's the obit : https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/95241468
includes the following :

Mr.Donovan was an Englishman by birth, had followed the sea as a vocation for some time, and a little over 20 years ago came to Port Pirie, where, except for a short while now and again, he continued to work on the wharfs, first as a labourer and then as foreman stevedore. Of late years he had been largely employed by the Spencer Gulf Stevedoring Company. Mr. Donovan was at the time of his death, comparatively speaking, but a young man, being  only 38 years of age, and he has left a widow and young family of three, for whom much sympathy is felt.

Possibilities have come to mind ;
Could the reporter have  it wrong when describing John Donovan as English born ?
Could John's parents have originally been from Ireland and moved to the UK ?
John's parents Irish but he himself born England.
Was employed by the company that owned the SS Bradford City but different ship, retraction made on behalf of company / ship when SS Bradford City was in port.
Last thought a bit of a stretch.

All John Donovan's on deserters lists seem to be from Ire.

The John Donovan whose desertion you quoted was aged 23 when he deserted, at Port Pirie in 1911.  Your John Donovan was already deceased.

I have quoted the information available directly from the South Australian Government Gazette.

I have used the R2M button and asked for a GM to help Martin start a thread on the general England Board.

Hi Sarah,

 :)

The only reason I suggested that Martin start a new thread on the England General board was so that the regulars there would not need to read through several pages of posts about the search for Michael DONOVAN, as father of John DONOVAN on that thread that you so kindly moved across.

I am sure that now that the thread is on the England General board that the experts there will recognise that the current focus would be on John DONOVAN, noted in his 1910 obituary as an Englishman, born circa 1872 (too late for the 1871 UK census) and who was in South Australia by 1891, so he may be findable on the 1881 UK census ...

  :D  Anyways, I am sure the English experts will be along shortly now the thread is across on that board, and they will help Martin with his quest once he has confirmed your question.
