Title: Ethel Mitchell
Post by: Karytay on Thursday 13 September 18 09:49 BST (UK)
I have another puzzle for the clever ladies of this forum, well it is a puzzle for me.

Ethel Mitchell born 2 Mar 1903, got this from the 1939 register.  Registered under her married name of Brennan. Her son Alastaire Brennan name is there as well.
It is a possibility that she was born in Durham. Found a 1911 census were and Ethel Michell is staying with grandparents John Mitchell and Pauline Jane Mitchell both 56years old.
On the census it says Ethel was born in Gateshead Durham abt. 1903. Also found civil registration index also giving year 1903 Gateshead Durham but no parents names.

She was the wife of William Terence Brennan. But have not found any marriage references. They had three children, William Terence, Alastaire Keith and Patricia Ann, all dead now.

And I have not been able to find her parents either.

Can you help please, thanks

www.gro.gov.uk

you need to sign up for an account (no charges unless you order a cert/pdf and no card details needed to sign up)

That site gives mother's maiden names for registrations of children born prior to Sept Q 1911 (which is when they started adding them to the old index)

The Ethel Mitchell birth registered Q1 1903, Gateshead had a mother's maiden name of Taylor.
Searching with surname Mitchell, no first name and mother's maiden name of Taylor there is the following possible coming up in Gateshead

Paulina Mitchell Q3 1905
and probably others, but that's as far as I looked.

Paulina was recorded on the 1911 census in Gateshead:

There is a marriage for a William T Brennan to an Ethel Mitchell registered Q2 1929, Newcastle upon Tyne which I'd put on the 'possibles' list.

GRO site gives the mmn of Ethele Henderson Taylor as Henderson

1901 Census RG13/4760/F151/p5
Beehive Inn, Gateshead has an Ethel Taylor living with parents John Rydon Taylor and wife Annie

There is a marriage Sep 1867 Newcastle T. 10b 145 between a James Pigdon Taylor and Annie Henderson. The name on the Census image is definiteley James Rydon but James Pigdon is the closest I can find on FreeBMD.

The 1901 Census has William Rydon Taylor, age 51, born 1850.

James Pigdon Taylor, with his brother William John Taylor, feature prominently in the newspapers 1870-1890. The Newcastle Courant, 7 July 1882, gives James' age as 30 and brother William 37.

The Mitchell were well to do family, and it looks like Jesmond Towers also has something to do with the family.

Charles Mitchell did indeed own Jesmond Towers (his sister in law was The Pink Lady -  the ghost, who the big girls used to scare us littlies about when the Towers was a school)

If your Ethel is linked to those Mitchells then you 'may' be looking at the wrong people? Nice though some of the houses in Gateshead were, when Charles Mitchell died in 1895 his estate amounted to £356,095 11s 8d - which was a long way above being well off :-)

The Towers was then passed to his son Charles William Mitchell after his mother died. Charles William died in 1903 and he left £922,542 4s 10d .
and 'that' is seriously rich!

Well I have not found a link to Charles Mitchell, he was the shipbuilder. I see Ethel's grandfather's occupation in the 1911 census was Marine Engineer. So he worked on the docks, their might be a link some where.
