I have never looked at transportation records even though I have nine very distant relatives were transported (from the Lewises, the dodgy part of the family!).
I came across a story in the newspaper archive anout a postman on Mull who got his son (about 16) to deliver some mail in 1828. His son stole £50 from one letter and ripped up the letter.
He was sent to Inveraray for trial and amazingly was not hung, he was given transportation for life.
I passed this on to a friend who is interested in that area. So had a look on Ancestry to see if I could identify the person. There is a Allan Maclean tried on 1st December 1828 and sent out on the JOHN on 22 May 1829 which is probably him.
There is a tree on Ancestry that could have him but not sure about its accuracy.
I wonder if someone more familiar with transportation records can point me to more on him so I can pass on to my friend.

ADD, oops, It is NOT a Colonial Pardon ... it is a Conditional Pardon. Colonial Pardons were issued in respect of Colonial convictions. My fingers got ahead of themselves .... :-[

One ceremony, recorded in one clergyman's register and then, to obey an 1810 regulation of the NSW Governor, that clergyman transmits the details through their denomination's heirarchy. Sometimes up to five different transmittals were needed, depending on the era and the clergy's circuit.

Thanks, a lot to go through there. I have to go out today so might not go through in detail until later.
All started as just seeing a small news item that I noticed whilst looking up something completely different! I tend to pass on things like that to a friend who is interested Argyll and Lochaber history and shares some stories in a newspaper column.

By the way, if anyone wants copies of the newspaper reports on the crime and the trial then send me a message and I can send them a copy as cannot post here with being copyright images.
I will try later to tidy up the report on the crime and post the transcription (BNA are happy with transcriptions being posted online, just images that have copyright restrictions).
