Title: Baptism of Eleanor WRIGHT abt 1757
Post by: Westy11 on Saturday 15 September 18 16:15 BST (UK)
Opinion please.

Eleanor WRIGHTE & William GARNER married at Thrussington 06 May 1776.  Eleanor was buried Thrussington 19 Aug 1843 aged 86 years.

In the 1841 census Eleanor was living with her son Joseph GARNER and his wife Jane & family in Thrussington.  Eleanor is noted as being born in the county.

However the only baptism that seems feasible is the baptism of Helen WRIGHT at Asfordby 15 Nov 1756 parents Joseph & Mary WRIGHT.

A few inconsistencies with this being:
the forename of Helen instead of Eleanor
I am unable to locate a child Mary named after her grandmother  Mary

Any ideas?

There is a baptism for an Eleanore Wright 22 October 1760, parents Thomas and Margaret, in Stapleford. Not overly far from Thrussington, about 10 miles or so.

There is a marriage in 1783 of Eleanor Wright of Stapleford, age 22, at Melton Mowbray, to William Blower. Probably the daughter of Thomas and Margaret.

Joseph Wright of Asfordby married Mary Felstead of Hoby, so nearer Thrussington, on 25th April 1756. Mary Felstead baptised in Hoby on 28th January 1732, daughter of William and Ann.

Thanks Emeltom,

It appears this Eleanor married John BIRTCHNALL 22 Sep 1796 both of Stapleford.  Eleanor was buried 07 Jun 1805 Oakham.

Back to the drawing board.

Well we seem spoilt for choice but it does seem the Stapleford Eleanor/s are not suitable.

Eleanor might have been written as Helen, Ellen or Nellie (or any spelling variation, depending on the literacy and hearing of the parish clerk)

I know this doesn't answer your query, but I thought I ought to mention it - sorry  :-[

Yes, I’ve had a lot of confusion over Ellen/Helen/Eleanor/Elinor etc in my tree. I get the impression the Ellen/Eleanor were commoner versions than Helen in the 1700 and 1800s.

There doesn’t HAVE to be a child named after maternal grandmother, does there!
