Title: Hawick Poorhouse
Post by: BillyF on Monday 17 September 18 19:21 BST (UK)
I`m getting confused; I`ve googled Hawick Poorhouse and maps show it as also being Drumlanrig Mews and The Loan. My gt gt grandfather died there in 1898, but in 1901 his wife , daughter and grandson lived at 17 The Loan. Were they the same place, when I was there a couple of years ago I went to see 17 The Loan and it did not appear to be there now.

I`m just trying to ascertain where the Poorhouse actually was.

There are references to The Loan as it was very close to the Hawick Workhouse. So, as you thought, family was close by.

As showing on the workhouse.org site, Hawick Workhouse later became Drumlanrig Hospital (see also https://historic-hospitals.com/gazetteer/scottish-borders/ with further maps).

This brings its location more up to date https://canmore.org.uk/site/95533/hawick-the-loan-drumlanrig-hospital

Another modern map here which could also help showing more clearly the location of the workhouse and the location of the road The Loan.

Oh thankyou Monica.

I`m a lot clearer now as to where it was situated. Also, one of the maps also shows clearly where the residence of James`s family was; I thought it was missing  but the map shows it did not border the road side as I thought, but was at the back through the archway.

Next time I go to Hawick ( hopefully soon ) I`ll take a walk through.

I forgot to say that there is also a good photo of the Melrose Asylum where my gt gt grandmother was when she died. Again, something for me to visit.

My granny was a nurse in Dingleton in the 1930s-1950s or so. Lived nearby too.

Quite a lot of my family, especially in Melrose, were also patients there.

" My granny was a nurse in Dingleton in the 1930s-1950s or so. "

It would have been hard work and long hours .

My gt gt grandmother was there on the 1901 census, although I don`t know when she was admitted. This has reminded me that I put that question on a back burner to be looked at later! She died there in 1902 age given as 72, which is 2 or 3 years out, but the informant was her son in law so I know I`ve got the right person.

You may be able to access her medical records in the archive in Edinburgh. See

Thank you. A good excuse to also go to Edinburgh ! She had a sorry life; born illegitimate, deserted by husband and died by " tumour and softening of the Brains "
