Title: Complete Beginner in Irish research needs pointing in the right direction
Post by: jmp on Wednesday 19 September 18 00:58 BST (UK)
Hi all,

Now this is a real newby question - sorry!. I am familiar with FH research in England and Wales and also to some extent Scotland but have just been asked to help someone with a family tree which has Irish Ancestors. I have looked through the stickies and am just getting more and more confused ???

Now I appreciate that the records are not as complete as England and Wales but what is really confusing me is which websites I would need to use for

a) looking at the 1901 and 1911 Censuses - are the websites different for Northern Ireland and the Republic?
b) BMD certificates similarly are there different websites to use dependent on which part of Ireland you are looking?
c) Parish records. I see some seem to be on FindMyPast but is there anywhere else to search?
d) Griffiths valuations.
and anything else you think might be helpful.

Once I can get a handle on where I need to look I might be able to make a start but until then...... ::)

Thankyou for your patience

Jackie  :D

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/   covers all of Ireland 1901 and 1911

BMD certificates similarly are there different websites to use dependent on which part of Ireland you are looking?  No...not until 1921!

Parish records. I see some seem to be on FindMyPast but is there anywhere else to search?

Depends on Religion!

There is no need to say Sorry for asking sensible questions!

Forget about what you don't know... start with what you do know!!

For example... Who are you looking for on 1911 Census?  Location?  Just put Surname and County, then search...see if you can find them!!

You seem to enjoy researching so why not post someone's name/age etc for Census to get you started??

OK... I don't know who you are looking for but this is the type of thing you can try if you were looking for a Marriage for John Smith around 1880.

So you can change it to someone you are looking for, years etc after 1845 if not RC, 1864 if RC

Take a look at Irish Toolkit https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com for "Free Irish Genealogy Advice, Tools and Resources".

Thank you all for that very useful information.

At the moment I am waiting for my friend to get her information together but she told me she didn't know whether it was the Republic or Northern Ireland where her ancestors came from, so I thought I would get ahead of the game by looking at the websites and at that point became confused as to which ones covered which areas.  ???
You have all been very helpful in lessening that confusion and added some that I had not come across as well.
Thank you all very much  and I love a challenge :D

It was just Ireland before 1921. The whole country was then part of the UK.
NB The State of Northern Ireland contains only 6 of 9 Ulster counties.
Irish Toolkit has a section for Norther Ireland. It also has a list of FH and local history societies.

Yes thank you Maiden Stone. I am aware of the division in 1921 but as I don't know when her ancestors came over here  ( before/ after 1921) I thought I had better cover all bases ;)

Thank you Hallmark for that link too :)

I reckon I will probably be back here with more questions once I get going :)

Griffith's Valuation, all Ireland

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Tithe Applotment Books, all Ireland
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

Public Record Office of Northern Ireland
lots of stuff, my favorite is the Valuation Revision Books = followup to Griffith's after 1865

https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/public-record-office-northern-ireland-proni/search-archives-online

Births, marriages, deaths, Northern Ireland after 1922
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/search-gronis-online-records

and find a favorite way/website to find Irish placenames. I have a lot of them bookmarked, but end up googling for them every time.

https://www.johngrenham.com/places/

Registration Districts by County
https://www.swilson.info/regdistbyco.php

Townland search
https://www.swilson.info/db/townlanddbs.php

the main problem with placenames is that there are so many variations of spelling. if you can't read the writing on a record, there is a board on rootschat to post the image on for help. If I can make out some of the name, I usually google for "County X townlands" then use my browser to search for the few letters in a row that I can read.

The two top hits are usually,

https://www.townlands.ie/ and the Wikipedia list of townlands.

for example:

https://www.townlands.ie/galway/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_townlands_of_County_Galway

Do you know of someone who married in Ireland before 1921?

If so, https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp  and just put Name in and Year Range... then Search!

Look at picture I posted.... Name     Year Range    and   tick Marriages box

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp  is your starting point/website

then secondly

Census  website
