Title: Thomas Willis and Ann Longstaff marriage 1880 Teesdale
Post by: Jopeg on Wednesday 19 September 18 19:15 BST (UK)
I wonder if there is a parish record available of this marriage. I am interested to know if Ann was A widow and if she was, what her maiden name was.

The marriage took place 1880, which is why you can find it on FreeBMD.

The best way to answer your questions would be to send for the marriage certificate.

Or are you assuming that they wed each other because of the way that the 4 names are listed?

Did they have kids?
What names, dates and birthplace(s) did the kids have?

I don't know why I put 1800 it was 1880 I have amended.

This is my Great Great Grandfather, I am descended from his first wife who died when my Great Grandmother was five.

He had no children from Ann Longstaff, I have found them in the census in 1881 in Staindrop, by 1891 he is living in the same house, again widowed but now living with his daughter Katie born in the USA (which is another story but absolutely proves it is him) Katie/Kitty was sister to my Great Grandmother.

I was just interested in Ann Longstaff because of Longstaffs in another line.

This looks a possible in 1871. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VB8S-9J8

have you looked at 1881 neighbours to see if any names look connected to 1871?

" I (you) have found them in the census in 1881 in Staindrop " i.e. near Barnard Castle, County Durham !!!

PaulineJ had found an Ann Longstaff in 1871 but it can’t be my Ann because she is still there in 1881 and 1891.

I am pretty sure I have found a death for my Ann in 1885 which gives her age as 55 so the birthdate may be 1830.

According to the 1881 Census Ann gives her place of birth as Barnard Castle and year of birth 1836. The closest I can find is a Mary Ann Longstaff baptised Barnard Castle 14 May 1835 parents George, a Currier, and Jane.

That's a possibility but given the possible new birth date I have an unmarried Ann Longstaff in Staindrop with presumably a daughter Ann in both 1871 and 1851 (when she is living with her Grandmother also Ann!) I can't find the two Anns in 1861 though. This does seem the right neck of the woods.

A slight update in case anyone else may be interested. I found their marriage in the newspaper.

On the 5th instant, at Startforth Church, Mr Thomas Willis of Barnard Castle to Miss A. Longstaff of Rokeby Villa, Startforth.

So it looks like she was unmarried, maybe she was housekeeper at Rokeby Villa?
