Title: Minnie/Matilda or Malinda?
Post by: Keziah2 on Thursday 20 September 18 15:19 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me please with this young lady born c1874 probably in either Kent or London but anything is possible. Her parents were in Maidstone in 1871.

I have been told she is on the 1881CR living in London Minnie Flatman age 7 parents Arthur & Susanna.

Ditto in 1891 still with her parents at the Norfolk Hotel, London age 17

Cant find her birth Registration but I did see something for a Malinda Latitia Collinson Flatman, which would tie in nicely as her MMN was Collinson.  Dont know where she was after 1891?

Possible

Death
Ap/Amy/June 1898
Kensington
Minnie Westhorpe Cullum age 24

Looks like she died in or associated with childbirth when Westhorpe was born.

Which mother was that as we have a Lizzie in 1881 and she would only have been 17 in 1871.

Who has the maiden name Collison?

Thank you both

Lizdb that was exactly the info I needed it looks like she was Malinda not Matilda.

Yes I did know mother is listed as Lizzie but I am pretty sure it was either Susanna Collinson or her fathers first wife Mary. He didn’t actually marry Susanna till many years later. The marriage certificate describes him as a widower & she as a spinster.

I see the marriage now - Dec 1897.

Can't see birth registration for Minnie though, presume it would be under Collison.

Yes - she had married Henry Westhorpe Cullen/Cullum whatever a couple of years before baby Westhorpe was born.

And I think the death I found was her, as Henry W Cullum , age 32 and a widower , (bn Suffolk like her dad) can be seen on 1901 census staying at the Clifton Hotel, Marylebone.

And - again tying in nicely! - in 1901 little 3 year old Henry Cullum is a grandson in the H/H of the Flatmans and co in the Norfolk Hotel! (I see Arthur isn't actually at home on census night)

Thanks for all that Liz - I am pretty certain we have the right person. Just can’t find a bpt for a Malinda/Melinda Flatman/Collinson.

Strange we cant spot a birth index. Brother Arthur who was also born before the marriage was registered :

Arthur Frederick Collison Flatman
Ap/May/Jun 1877
Marylebone

mmn Collison

He is with them age 13 in 1891 but I haven't got him in 1881 yet.

No I couldn’t find him either but she was about to have another one so perhaps he was being cared for elsewhere.
Arthur was at his country home in 1901.

The person you are searching for, Melinda Loëtitia Collinson Flatman, is my great grandmother. She died a few days after giving birth to my grandfather, also Henry Westhorpe Cullum, in April 1898. She has a beautiful grave with a statue in Mellis churchyard in Suffolk - I will brave the Corona Virus and go and take some photos if anyone would be interested? I have a fair number of papers on the Cullum family connection to the Flatmans. My great grandfather was so upset by her death that he abandoned my grandfather and fled to Canada, where he joined the gold rush...
Contact me if you wish,
Simon Westhorpe Cullum

So, briefly, Arthur Flatman was born in Redgrave, Suffolk, son of an agricultural labourer. He went from that start, via being a butler, then a lodging house keeper, to being a multiple hotel owner in London. Not bad going! He married Mary Jane Mead on 10th March 1869 in the Wesleyan Chapel, Farnham, near Aldershot in Hampshire. They were both 21. This is on the marriage certificate. According to the 1871 census, Susannah Collison was an unmarried servant in Prospect House in Maidstone with Arthur Flatman and his wife Mary...

Yes, I was there today - the chain link fence is broken around it and I will fix it in the near future. I also noted that Arthur Flatman’s grave is next to it - and his wife Susannah is on it - so he clearly remarried after Mary Jane Mead

I have sent you a PM Simon.   Yes he certainly married Susanna but it’s a long and interesting story with some twists.
