A few days ago I found that NZ archives, Wellington have Church of England Baptism records
for Bay of Islands. This was too late for Spades' visit to the archives following another request
of mine. Today I note that Spades will again be visiting the archives so I am adding another
look-up request please.
I am looking for C of E Baptisms for any children of Johnson and Mary Brothers between February
1840 and March 1845, possible names Annie, Marion/Marian, John and Edward. Place - Bay of
Islands, Russell. Johnson was stationed for part of this time in Okiato.
Have attached a reference I found on Archway
Thankyou,
Regards,
Jen.

I am hoping these are the direct links for the person who may do the look up for you.....

[There is also this one but appears to be outside the period of 1840-1845]......

Thankyou Minniehaha, What do you think the 'Bay of Islands Missions' refers to? There is no
mention of Church of England registers (Christ Church). Could these be the Catholic records
perhaps? Johnson Brothers was Church of England and Mary Brothers was Catholic so the Baptisms
could be in either denomination. I asked for the C of E records because I found the archives
had these records and it seems a good place to start.

Hi Jen,
I can look for these files for you.
Unfortunately I'm unable to request either of the first two files linked to by Minniehaha (thank you!) so I'll wait a week or two and try again.

Thanks so much Spades ;D I think the records I'm looking for are the Christ Church, Church of
England Baptism records on microfilm with the reference given in my original post. The references
given by Minniehaha are not I believe the C of E records but may be the Catholic records.
Are you able to access the Church of England records on microfilm?
Regards,
Jen.

Hi Jen,
To be certain, can you put up the direct links for Spades that you have found, please.......
Minniehaha.

Hi Minniehaha, Unfortunately I don't know how to do that. The reference I found was on
a website for the Church of England in N.Z. I mistakenly said it was from
Archway but it does state that these records are held by NZ archives, Wellington.
I am having great difficulty working my way through NZ records, the Maori
references are causing confusion as I don't know what they are or where they are -
hence my request for help from those who do know. :D I will look again to see
what I can find on Archway.
Regards,
Jen.

Hello...
The ADFD mentioned in your original post is the code used by ArchivesNZ/Archway for "The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia", also known as The Church of England in New Zealand. (https://tinyurl.com/y8cng9jk)
---
The following link will show you the entries for the microfilms mentioned in your original post (Microfilms 2792, 2793 and 2794)
https://tinyurl.com/y9f36kmw (https://tinyurl.com/y9f36kmw)
Please note that the files linked to by Minnie are listed.
---
You mentioned Russell. The original name for this settlement was Kororareka so any baptism registers for this area may need to be searched, as well as the baptism registers for Waimate.
The registers for Kororareka are listed on the above tinyurl link.
---
What do you think the 'Bay of Islands Missions' refers to?
On the following image Deed no.83 refers to the Church of England Mission at Waimate.
This Waimate is not the one found down in the South Island but is the one found in the Bay of Islands sometimes referred to as Waimate North (not that that's a place name with which I'm familiar. Apparently there's a Waimate over in Taranaki too...)

Where did you find the term "Christ Church, Church of England Baptism records"

Hello Beg, I really appreciate your help, you have clarified this for me - a lot! ;D
Have checked the Archway link and have isolated 3 records for Kororareka which
I believe are the relevant ones. I will add them to a post to Spades.
The Brothers family arrived in Russell from Aust. in February 1840 and departed
NZ in April 1845. Documents sent to me by Spades confirmed that Johnson Brothers
was employed by the NZ Government as a 'turnkey' at the Gaol in Russell and at
some time was at the gaol in Okiato. For this reason I believe the Kororareka
records are the correct ones.
Re "Christ Church, Church of England baptisms" I have read that the first
service for this church was in 1836 so assumed that the registers of this church
would record baptisms for Russell during the 1840-1845 timeframe.

Jen.

Hi Spades, After some great help from NZ R'chatters I have isolated 3 records held at
the Archives, Wellington. They are for Church of England baptisms, Kororareka.
Looking for baptisms of children of Johnson and Mary Brothers from February 1840
to April 1845. The Brothers family was at Russell, Bay of Islands during this
timeframe.

Jen.

Thanks Jen,

Hi Jen,
Just to let you know that I won't be able to visit Archives until late next week at the earliest as I'll be away on holiday.
I will be keeping an eye on the board though, just in case anyone starts rolling Jaffas down the aisles... ::) ::)
Thanks, Minniehaha, for the links. :)
Spades
-
Hi Spades, Thanks, no hurry at all for those, enjoy your holiday :D Ah! Jaffas, those were the
days! ;D
Regards,
Jen.
-
Hi Jen,
I'm back, and no Jaffas!
I've tried to order those files via the links provided by Minniehaha, but all three are unavailable.
I'll enquire on my next visit, but I'll try ordering them again next week in any case.
Spades

Hi Spades, Hope you had a great holiday, no jaffas means a very well behaved board ;D :D
Have checked the links provided by Minniehaha in reply #12 and they are the correct
ones, classification open access. I wonder why they are currently unavailable?
Thankyou for your help with these, your tenacity is appreciated. Good things come to
those who wait :D

I have every confidence in you Minniehaha ;D You rescued me when I needed help with
the NZ archives :D I was getting nowhere on my own!

Hi Jen,
Again, my apologies for the delay, and for not realising that the files were available on microfilm.
I have just gone through the relevant pages for baptisms on both films, 2792 and 2793, but could not see any appearance of the name Johnson or BROTHERS at all, sorry.
Spades

Hi Spades, Thanks so much for looking up the C of E baptism records, much appreciated.
No result could possibly indicate that the children were baptised elsewhere, possibly
by the French Catholic fathers - or of course, not baptised at all!
Regards,
Jen.
