Title: looking for apprenticeship records for Cecil Montague Bennett
Post by: WendysWillmottResearch on Tuesday 25 September 18 08:36 BST (UK)
Hi, I am trying to find any apprenticeship records for Cecil Montague Bennett, born 1893 in Thaxted, Essex - he was a mechanic / mechanical engineer.  His parents were William Bennett and Fanny (Ratcliff).  He served in the Army 1914 - 1920 as an ambulance driver, which I am guessing meant that he was also responsible for maintaining the vehicles.

Thanks, Wendy

He may well have learnt his mechanical/engineering skills in the Army. Have you found him in 1911 to see what he is doing then? I can find the family but no Cecil.

On the 1911 his occupation is 'engineer'. It would appear that he dropped the names Cecil and preferred Montague -

No wonder I couldn't find him.

I have been looking for Apprenticeships and found this on the National Archives

"Official records of apprentices were kept in England and Wales between 1710 and 1811, when stamp duty was payable on indentures of apprenticeship. Registers of the duty paid were kept by the Commissioners of Stamps."

so it is possible that no records exist for the period you are looking at.
