Title: Dorothea Struck
Post by: vienna on Wednesday 26 September 18 16:07 BST (UK)
Hello recently I found out my G G G Grandmother Dorothea Struck was born in Nehmten, Plon, Schleswig Holstein, Germany. I am struggling to find a record of her birth in that area however I have found a record for a Doris Struck born in Nehmten at around the right time 1823, so my querie Dorothea is could Doris be Dorothea .

Hi,

In Germany, "Doris" is often considered to be the short form for "Dorothea". Which would tend to suggest that it would be the other way round, i.e. her birth record would show "Dorothea", but she would have been known as "Doris".

Do you have any other details for her? Do you know where/when she died?

This link shows gravestones with the name Struck:

http://grabsteine.genealogy.net/indilist.php?nachname=STRUCK&b=S

It seems to be popular in Northern Germany. Quite a few in Plön. (If you can't type an Umlaut, you can write Plön als Ploen.)

Best regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,
Thank you for that information it is much appreciated.I know very little about Dorothea accept she gave birth to my G G Grandfather in the maternity hospital in Kiel in 1847, she was an unmarried mother and the father's name was Christian Braeutigam from Raisdorf  apparently the child was conceived in Preetz .I have obtained this information from a baptismal record.

Plön was a part of Denmark until 1864

This is a link to the Danish Family Search / Census reports

https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/search/

I did a search for both names in Nehmten:

County: Slesvig-Holsten
Hundred: Plön
Parish: Nehmten

First Name: Dorothea / Doris
Last Name: Struck

NO HITS!

If you ignore the first fields: County, Hundred , Parish  etc etc

Just enter the first (Dorothea, Doris) and last name (Struck) and hit "search"
There are several hits but none that fit your query.

Check the column "location" for Plön

A click on the magnifying glas on the left opens the census report

Too much genealogical info? - not only the baptismal info but the birth info and the conception info!

Thanks for that Dave ,I have looked on Danish family Search and I was interested to see there is a family of Strucks  living in Preetz in the 1840 census there are no less than 5 girls who are about the right age but none of them are called Dorothea also on the same census for Preetz there is a Asmus Breautigam working as a servant which is the occupation recorded for Christian Braeutigam on the baptismal record , this would be 7 years before before the baby was born but I do wonder if there may be a connection.

Hi
Here is a Johann Christian Braeutigam born 1847 leaving Germany to Great Britain as a seaman. His parents are recorded as Dorothea Struck and Christian Braeutigam.
