Title: Elizabeth Andrews 1735
Post by: Sunlaws on Friday 28 September 18 18:14 BST (UK)
Hi

Seeking to confirm information about Elizabeth Andrews born 1735. Her father is reputedly John, MP for Devizes, though I can't find confirmation of this.

Regards,

Lesley

https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/ doesn't have a record of an MP named John Andrews in the 18th century.

There was a Townsend Andrews (1702-37) of Coulston Witshire, MP for Hindon, later MP for Bossiney.
b. 20 Nov. 1702, 1st s. of Thomas Andrews of Highgate, Mdx. by Sarah, da. and h. of John Townsend of Highgate, citizen and soapmaker of London. educ. Merchant Taylors’ 1717; Clare, Camb. 1718; I. Temple 1718. m. bef. 1731, Catherine, da. of Thomas Gibson. suc. fa. bef. Nov. 1721 and to Tytherton Lucas and other Wilts. estates of his maternal gd.-fa. John Townsend 1725

Thank you, Philip. I had seen Townsend Andrews, and thought his dates and location were good, but other sources say her father was John, and that he was MP for Devises, which he clearly wasn't!

There is an Elizabeth Andrews b 1735 in Wiltshire baptisms, but sadly, I don't have access.

Lesley

Thank you, Geoff.

Father of that Elizabeth is Charles, and I'm convinced her father was John, even if his being the MP for Devizes is not true, so I think I can rule that one out.

regards,

Lesley

I'm convinced her father was John,

Why do you think this?

Who did Elizabeth marry and where/when.  Sometimes this information helps us to track back

Hi
Thank you for your interest. I thought I knew her father was John, but on thinking about it, I have no evidence, nor was he MP for Devizes!
Elizabeth/Eliza/Bessy/Betty married George Baillie (né Hamilton) on 12th May 1757 at St Michael in Bath, I discover from FreeReg, and one of the witnesses was a Townsend Andrews, the other Catherine Andrews. Townsend can't be the MP, as he died in 1737, but possibly his son; Catherine is probably either his mother or his sister. Searches for children of Townsend the MP come up with Catherine chr. 1731, Thomas chr 1732, Townsend chr 1733 and Sarah 1736, all at St Martin in the Fields, but no Elizabeth!
Hard evidence gleaned from letters is that her father is dead before 1757, mother is alive, grandfather has 'creditors', and father was a close friend of John Garth, who was MP for Devizes.

Lesley

Just to conclude this query, I have now discovered, in Eliza Andrews' own handwriting, that she was born May 13th 1735 and 'my sister Katherine was born March 24th 1731, my brother Townsend was born March 14th 1733, my sister Sarah October 24th 1737'. (No mention of Thomas, who must have died young. Why her siblings made it into St Martin in the Fields registers and Eliza didn't is a mystery.

Lesley
