Have you followed back earlier census' for an average birth yr/consistency on where born etc?
Do you have the fathers name & occ. from the marriage?

Smith, Margaret Grandmother Widow F 60 b Yorkshire
This looks to be an error & should read mother or mother-in-law?

So 'Smith, Margaret Grandmother Widow F 60 b Yorkshire' is M-i-L
Wasn't sure if 'mother' had remarried but her age made her too young to be the g/mother of 'Head' of house.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this. It’s very appreciated.
Any ideas on how I can find out more about the Thompson side too?

Start looking with parameters
Robert b c 1845 Liverpool
father James THOMPSON a joiner (or similar occupation)
I have to say it's proving elusive. Don't forget to wildcard for the H and the P

Thanks Mckha489. I’m wondering if there’s a connection with Chirk in Wales.

daughter Martha married Thomas Charles FORTNUM 13 Sept 1892 (may be Fortman)
She gave her father as Robert Alexander THOMPSON a Smith
(but of course that might just be because she knew that was the brother's name)
William Henry married 7 June 1893 to Elizabeth Ann Dearden MITCHELL
He said father was Robert THOMPSON, boiler maker
-
Mckha489 That’s the line.

Possible father James????
Liverpool Mercury 15 November 1861
to be sold the premises lately in the occupation of James THOMPSON joiner and builder ..... at the junction of Conway Street and Olliver Street in Birkenhead
-
James THOMPSON the joiner of Birkenhead married Eliza WOOD in 1839 Wirral reg.
Lots of children. No Robert and No Emily :(
he was born abt 1818, Wavertree, lancashire and was alive (widower) at the 1861 census
Death of Eliza 20 Jan 1861 at 7 Clifton Terrace, wife of James THOMPSON builder of Birkenhead
Liverpool Mercury 26 January 1861
and James died 'suddenly' same address 12 August 1866 - Liverpool Mercury 14 August 1866

Thank you for putting so much effort in. I’m amazed!
-
I'm just not sure if it's the right James! but putting it out there anyway.
-
No Will. Administration granted to son James. also 7 clifton crescent. Son and one of next of kin.
So no will to get to see if Robert mentioned.
-
There’s a William Henry Thompson, Watchmaker living in the same area of Toxteth, I think there’s a connection. I don’t know how to show it.

I’m thinking you need to buy that Robert Ferguson cert, to rule it in or out. As if in it might help with the mother’s name for census search, and would also rule out James the Joiner from Birkenhead.
1871 census is just coming up a blank. I can’t find Emily or Arthur Barron then either. Nor a Thompson Bar(r)on marriage.
