A man matching the name and age of my ancestor was convicted of riot and imprisoned for five months in 1836 in Rutland.
I have looked elsewhere to see if I can find any clue to his identity as I am not sure if he is mine.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks.

The William Winterton (no middle name) was aged 55 according to the criminal register therefore born c.1781. Does this age tie in with your William Valentine Winterton?

My William was William Valentine Winterton.
He was born 14 February 1783 in Morcott, Rutland.
His parents were Thomas Winterton and Elizabeth Branson. His wife was Mary Fowler and they had four children together.
Unfortunately the record I have does not say where the trial took place.

I know it was in Rutland.
I do not know the village!
I really wish people would not treat like I am stupid while trying to help me at the same time.
The image of this event on ancestry does not give much information.

Since 'your' William Valentine Winterton was the only William Winterton of that age group in Rutland, and the only one of that age group who died/buried in Rutland I would say this William Winterton is indeed your man.

The trial was at the Rutland Assizes, which were held at Oakham but covered the whole county.
The Stamford Mercury of 8 July 1836 reports that at the 30th June session Sam. Lee, Jos. Lee and Wm. Winterton were indicted for rioting at Empingham on 8 June. The riot was concerning the new poor laws and they were part of a crowd of 50 or 60 who attacked/intimidated the Relieving Officer in order to obtain some money. William Winterton claimed he was in the pub and didn't need relief but was fetched out to protect others who did.
