Hi there,
I am trying to research Henry Thurston but have got stuck. Wonder if anyone could help.
I know from 1871 and 1881 census that he was born about 1819 Great Cressingham. He is married to Emma Johnston and have several children. I am trying to find out who his parents are.
I found a christening for 11 Nov 1818 in Great Cressingham with parents of Jeremiah and Judith.
But I can find no marriage for Jeremiah and Judith and no mention of Judith in any records.
In the 1841 census I found a Henry Thurston born about 1820 Great Cressingham but the head of house is Daniel Thurston.
I found another 1841 census with a Henry Thurston born about 1818 but his parents are Jeremiah and Diana.
I am confused about who Henry's parents are or if Jeremiah married again?
If anyone could find any records related to Henry it would be most appreciated.
Thank you
Vicky

When did he marry Emma?
If it was late 1837 or after you can get the marriage certificate to find the name of his father.
-
Is this the marriage?
Jun 1865 Wayland
Henry Thurston
Emma Johnson
-
He married her in 1864 in Ovington
Can I see that free online or would I have to order a certificate?
-
That's the one although I had 5th Feb 1864 down but names are the same
-
There's a Judith Thurston death in Dec 1843 Swaffham.
-
Thank you.
I did think maybe Jeremiah remarried to a Diana and there are two marriages of a Jeremiah Thurston to Diana but they are both before Henry was born
-
So Henry was mid 40's when he married. I wonder if he had been married before then?
Have you found him in 1851/1861?
-
I can see marriages for his children online but can't see his unfortunately.
He has a daughter with middle name Diana.
-
Thanks for looking.
I haven't found him in the 1861 census.
In 1851 I only found the one where he is with father Daniel but not sure if that's him
-
The baptism you found does say Judith I agree and father is a publican.
That occupation might help if the Jeremiah with Diana was also a publican.
-
Ooh thank you I didn't see that he was a publican. If Jeremiah had later children with Diana it may say on their baptism.

1861
Dianna Thurston 78 head widow farmer
Jeremiah Thurston 52 son unmarried
Henry Thurston 38 son unmarried
Elizabeth Breese 17 servant
Could be as Henry unmarried and I found the banns of his marriage online and it did say he was a bachelor.
Maybe Judith is a red herring not sure yet.
-
Do you think the Daniel you found was actually Diana?
1851 ties in with the 1861 above
Diana Thurston 68 widow farmer
Jeremiah Thurston 44 son unmarried
Henry Thurston 31 son unmarried
age is a bit off but same information otherwise for both census
-
Back again to the 1841
Jeremiah Thurston 64 yeoman
Diana 58
Jeremiah 34
Henry 21
a baptism for Jeremiah the son might clinch it - then again it might not!
-
Thank you for all that. That's really helpful. I think you're right Daniel might be Diana. The age fits.
It all makes sense apart from Judith.

There's Jeremiah, base born son of Dinah Bowen

Don't understand the Judith bit though.
-
Wow thank you that's great.
I know Judith is totally throwing me off.
I thought maybe Henry was baptised in 1818 but actually born earlier before his father's marriage to Diana but all the censuses say he was born about 1818.
-
It could be some kind of mistake perhaps.
There's a Diana Bowen baptized at Watton, 22 October 1782
Parents George and Anne

Thank you for that

To confuse matters even more there seems to be two Jeremiahs married to Diana.
There is Jeremiah Thurston who married Diana Bowen in 1815
And there is Jeremiah who married Diana Deeks in 1814 in Hingham.
How do I know which Jeremiah is the right one?
One of the Jeremiahs is son of Jeremiah(born 1749) and Susanna Hubbard.
Don't know which one!
-
It's Jeremiah who was born before his father Jeremiah married Diana/Dinah, Henry was born after the marriage.
In his will he acknowledges that both Jeremiah and Henry are his sons.
-
Thank you.
I think I've figured some of it out. I think that my Jeremiah is married to Diana Bowen but that means the family tree I had worked out above him is all as it's for the other Jeremiah.
Now I can't find a birth/baptism for Jeremiah. All I know is he was born abt 1777 in Norfolk.
If anyone can find his parents would be hugely grateful.
-
Jeremiah son of Jeremiah and Susanna Thurston bap Wreningham 8 Feb 1778 (from Wreningham AT's)
Jeremiah Thurston married Susannah Hubbard 6 Feb 1771 Wrenningham
There is a Jeremiah bap Wreningham 7 Nov 1749 to Jeremiah and Grace Thurston
-
That's the one I found but I don't think it's the right one. There are two Jeremiahs both born about the same time, both married Dianas so I think that one is for the other Jeremiah.
-
I could be wrong though
