Yes, I know Kellys in New York are a nightmare- which is why I need help. What I have so far-
James J. Kelly born Oct.1861 N.Y. (both parents born Ireland) according to 1900 census- and was a plumber (thank goodness for a slightly unusual occupation)-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-69BQ-P82?i=43&cc=1325221
He married c1885 (marriage not found yet) Catherine Spooner
Topic on her family here- http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=215949
I have his family in later census records in 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925, 1930.
From 1919 the family lived at 2511 Poplar St., Bronx. He died circa 1930 and I believe he's the James J. Kelly who died in the Bronx 2 July 1931 age 67.
He had a brother John F. Kelly (middle name Felix), also a plumber, born Aug.1865 N.Y. according to 1900 census-

He married c1890 (marriage not found yet) Sophia Burke. Sophia died 1921 but haven't found Thomas' death yet.
Today I finally found a clue as to their parents-
1880 Census- 427 West 32d St., N.Y.: Thomas Kelly, 41, Ire., stone flagging; wife Mary Kelly, 44, Ire.; son James Kelly, 17, at plumbing; son John Kelly, 15, NY, at school.

I'm wondering if anyone can help find the above family of Thomas & Mary before and after 1880.
All I can find so are two 2 possible records- but not sure I'm on the right track-
? 1870 Census- N.Y.: Thomas Kelly, 40, labourer; Mary Kelly, 36; James Kelly, 7; John Kelly, 5; Thomas Kelly, 3; Joseph Kelly, 6 mo.
? 1875 N.Y.State Census (1 June)- Brooklyn, Kings Co.: wife Mary Kelly, 48, Ire.; child Katy Kelly, 14, Brooklyn; child Jas Kelly, 13, Brooklyn; child John Kelly, 8, Brooklyn.

UPDATE
Found John F. Kelly's file in LDS Bronx Probate files- died 19 Sept.1928 (home address and names of 2 surviving children match). With that date I was finally able to locate the death extract-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WLB-CN9
Parents given as Thomas Kelly & Mary Fogherty (both born in Ireland) which might connect to family story about brother James J. Kelly's family- James' mother and mother-in-law (Bridget/Anna Fogerty) supposed to have known each other in Ireland.

You don't mention that you have the 1892 New York State Census record for James and Catherine. Found a possible James Kelly, aged 31, a laborer, in Brooklyn, with wife Kate, aged 29. No children in the household yet. Suggests a marriage around 1891?
I also have an Alexander & Susan Kelly in Brooklyn and later in Long Island that have driven me crazy over the years, so know how you feel.

Thanks for the suggest but not sure if it's the right family of not. Eldest child was Mary C. Kelly, known as Mamie, born May 1890 (known she wasn't born much later than that as next child Florence Josephine was born Oct.1891).

Many thanks for the list. Will put it in the files to see if those addresses turn up again.

In New York city directories, for Thomas Kelly, all at 427 W. 32nd, names for occupation:
1876 stonecutter
1877 stone
1879 stone
1880 cutter
1882 mason
1883 mason
1884 cutter
1886 cutter
Nothing before 1876 or after 1886, for that address, in the directories I could find.
-
Many thanks for those latest details. If the Mary Kelly who died in 1888 is Thomas wife then it's possible they moved a short distance away just after the 1886 directory.

If this is the Mary Kelly you referenced, this death record gives parents' names.

The address given above is close by the 427 W. 32nd given in the 1880 census record. This Mary's age is consistent with the census record, also. This record said she was married not widowed, so your Thomas would still be alive in 1888, assuming this Mary is his wife.
I have a feeling this death might be connected, a newborn who died the day after the above Mary Kelly. Baby's parents were Thomas and Mary. Was this a late-in-life baby for your Mary?

I suspect that the 1888 death for Mary Kelly is the correct one. I was able to find her baptism (and that of a sister) in Ireland. Tried searching for a death notice without any luck. The infant death also raises the possibility of quite a few more children but there are lots of Thomas Kelly's with a wife Mary. I had hoped to find Thomas' death using his occupation but nothing promising yet. Many thanks.

If you can find a way to contact Calvary cemetery personnel, they should be able to tell you if Mary, Maggie, and Thomas Kelly are buried in the same plot, plus other info about them, like birth and death dates.

Calvary Cemetery shows no email address, which would have been convenient.
"The Trustees of St. Patrick’s Cathedral owns and operates Calvary, Gate of Heaven, Ascension and Resurrection cemeteries. "
The cemetery has 3 million burials but only 109000 given on findagrave.
https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/64107/calvary-cemetery
"The cemetery is divided into four divisions. First Calvary is often called "Old Calvary" by long-time residents of the area. Second, Third and Fourth are all considered part of "New Calvary."
First Calvary Cemetery : Filled by 1867, located at 49-02 Laurel Hill Blvd. between the Long Island Expressway & Review Ave.
St. Calixtus Division (south side of Greenpoint Ave.)
Second Calvary Cemetery : Located on the west side of 58th St between Queens Blvd & the Brooklyn-Queens Espressway, land acquisition ended in 1888.
St. Agnes Division (south side of Laurel Hill Blvd.)
Third Calvary Cemetery: est. 1879, located on the west side of 58th St, between the LIE & the BQE.
St. Sebastian Division (north side of Laurel Hill Blvd.)
Fourth Calvary Cemetery: est. 1900, located on the west side of 58th St, between the LIE & 55th Ave.
St. Domitilla Division (south side of Second Calvary.)"
Another avenue is to contact the archdiocese, which might have burial records.
https://archny.org/
The archdiocese has an archives:
http://archnyarchives.org/
http://archnyarchives.org/genealogy/
"At this time, cemetery and other death records are still maintained by the individual parish or cemetery."
That last is at the very bottom of the page of info about genealogy.

Thanks for taking the time to provide so much detail. Will have to see if I can find my original notes and check what I was told at the time.
