Does anybody have a family connection to John CORNWELL (born 1827 Cambridgeshire UK) who emigrated to Australia with his family aboard the Washington Irving in 1857 and settled in the north Sydney area ? He was a first cousin of mine and I'm trying to establish exactly where/when he died (amongst other things). If you can help then please get in touch by private message if you prefer. Many thanks.

Do you know if he was related to the Cornwell family of brewers who also lived in the north Sydney area?
-
Hello Jennaya,
Not to my knowledge, but I may not have every branch of the family identified as yet. Thanks for your interest.
-
When I get back from holidays in a few weeks, I will see what information I have and we can see if there are any matches.
-
Thank you Jennaya. That is much appreciated.
Private messages received in response to my query prompts me to add the following details:
John CORNWELL (b 1827 Cambs.) arrived in NSW in 1857 with his second wife Rebecca (BENSTEAD 1838-1857) and two children from his first marriage; Sarah West CORNWELL (b 1849) & Holmes CORNWELL (b 1851). Another child, Isaac, was born en-route but died shortly after arrival. After the death of Rebecca, he married Mary Ann SLATER and had at least four more children; John West CORNWELL (1859-1859), Rebecca CORNWELL (1866-1950), Sydney CORNWELL (1864-1950), & Mary West CORNWELL (b 1866).

Mary West’s marriage incorrectly listed. Children’s deaths have her as Mary West:
663/1894 SPOTSWOOD James CORNWELL Mary M SYDNEY
2787/1901 PERCY Henry SPOTWOOD Mary W SYDNEY - it should be Piercy and Spotswood, as can be found in family death notices on TROVE.

Debra,
What a fabulous document. Many thanks for sharing this as it answers my original question beyond all expectations and/or doubt. And yes, I did omit young Rhoda who was overlooked on the turn of the page. Thanks again.
Dundee,
Many thanks for all your sleuthing which is much appreciated. I feel that I have a much better grasp on this family's history now. What a great community RootsChat attracts - I'm most impressed.

Rebecca, 2nd wife of John, recorded as CORNWALL:
3986/1857 CORNWALL Rebecca AGE 20 YEARS DIED SMITHFIELD PARRAMATTA
What is the surname of the daughter Rebecca who you have deceased in 1950?
Was she first Palmer, then McHardy?

Hello Jamjar,
Yes, you have it. My current understanding is that Rebecca CORNWELL (b 18.5.1869 Parramatta) married first husband George PALMER in 1883 (marriage registered in Sydney) and her second, George McHARDY, on 21.7.1899 at Woolangong. She died on 14.7.1950 in Hornsby.

That’s good, Peter.
What about Sarah Austin? I haven’t been able to work that one out.
Do you have a tree connection to the Holmes Cornwell of Queensland?
Death:
1952 B40533 Holmes John Cornwell parents John Cornwell and Eliza Rayment
1896 B17928 Holmes Cornwell to Margaret Black Kelly
Holmes and Margaret Black Kelly had 10 children between 1897 and 1907 (a set of twins and triplets)
If my memory is correct, they are from the same area as your Holmes. It appears this family came out together as their daughter Julia, as found on the 1871 UK census, married and died in QLD also.

Hello Jamjar,
All I have on Sarah West CORNWELL (b 9.3.1849 Bottisham Fen) is her marriage to James AUSTEN at Parramatta in 1869, her death on 12.10.1929, & subsequent burial at Rookwood. To explain, I only trace the male CORNWELL family line - it just helps me keep things more manageable.
And yes, I am a second cousin to Holmes John CORNWELL and was aware of his marriage to Margaret KELLY but I currently only have one child listed from their marriage. So it seems I have a lot more work to do there. Many thanks for the steer.
Does your own ancestry somehow connect to this CORNWELL jigsaw ?
-
No, I don’t have Cornwell in my tree, I just like a challenge.
Silly me, I don’t know why I didn’t try that spelling:
19983/1929 AUSTEN Sarah (-CORNWALL) 8O YRS REDFERN REDFERN
Births for John and Margaret, QLD:
1897 John Percival Holmes died 1958 - married Effie Winifred Nielsen
1898 James Alexander died 1949 buried Balmoral Cemetery Brisbane - married Ivy Johnson
1900 Isabella Marjory married James William Innes

1903 Margaret Ivy died 1904 buried South Brisbane Cemetery with Thomas William and 2 Kelly’s

Holmes was cremated at Mt Thompson.

Jamjar,
I am staggered by your very kind co-operation and particularly as you have no personal interest. Many, many thanks. You have totally rejuvenated my research into my Australian ancestors and I raise my glass in your general direction.

Nothing like a little prod to get one interested again, Peter. ;D
My trees are completed, so I’m always looking for others to dabble in.

Jamjar,
Feel free to dabble in the CORNWELL tree as much you like. I remain very much obliged to you.
Kind Regards,

Holmes Cornwell means he is definitely in (or should be in ) my Ayres/ Cornwell tree. I will have a look over the weekend.
-
Redroger,
He is most certainly part of your tree being the second son of John Day CORNWELL (1787-1864) & Sarah WEST (1793-1891) of White Fen, Bottisham. He is mentioned in John Day's will dated 18 May 1858 where, described as 'now in Australia', he inherited £30.
-
Thankyou Peter, Yes I do have him, and he's not that far distant in terms of relationship.
-
My grandfather's name was John William Cornwell born in 1888 in Newmarket Cambridgeshire. His parents were John Cornwell and Sarah Ann Howe.
His siblings were Florence Grace, Samuel Covill, Ethel Maud, Lillian Hannah, Hephzibah Sarah and Gerald Benjamin.
My grandfather came out to Australia in 1913 with his first wife Fanny Wayland.
Just wondering whether I am related to any of the other Cornwell's on this page, and if so would like to learn more about the Cornwells in England.

Newmarket though in Suffolk was the registration centre for Bottisham Cambs, I have just checked my tree, and his name is not readily apparent, but my rsearch is definitely incomplete. I think it is highly likely he is a member of the extended Cornwell clan. I will do some further checking unless another person gets back to you
