Title: Morton Britton. b 1876, Mile End Old Town.
Post by: solidrock on Thursday 04 October 18 10:32 BST (UK)
Morton Britton. b 1876, Mile End Old Town.  He had a daughter Adelaide born about 1904. In the 1911 census he was living at 85 Wellington Road, Stoke Newington, Hackney, with his wife Hannah and 5 children. I can't find a marriage for Morton and Hannah or a birth for Adelaide.
Adelaide went on to marry Archibald Victor Otway, 25 Dec 1924 • Shoreditch, London.
Any help with the marriage of Morton and birth of Adelaide would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hannah’s maiden name seems to have been Quaife, from the later birth registrations.

Annie Elizabeth Britton, mmn Quaife, Dec qtr 1907 Islington
Rosalie Britton, mmn Quaife, Jun qtr 1909 Hackney
Marie Britton, mmn Quaife, Sep qtr 1911 Hackney

So are these the earlier girls in disguise?

Winifred May Britton, mmn Quaife, Sep qtr 1903 Hackney - Adelaide?
Gladys Maud Britton, mmn Quaife, Sep qtr 1905 Islington - Hester/Esther?

Puzzling isn't it.

Are Morton and Hannah together in 1901 or separate?

Not the right names but there is this marriage in Dec 1899 Islington

Harry Morton Britton
Stuart Noble
Charlotte Fanny Quaife
Florence Wells

They may not pair up together but unusual names.

Morton Britton of 40 Beaumont Sq was admitted to Stepney Jewish School on 26 Feb 1883.

His birthdate was stated as 15.8.77 - a year out I think.

So do we have a situation where these are all the same people, with names being changed?

Charlotte Fanny becomes the more Jewish-sounding Hannah (did she convert to Judaism?)
Winifred b 1903 becomes Adelaide - after Morton’s mother
Gladys b 1905 becomes Esther/Hester - after Morton’s sister

 ???

A bit more help please.
Adelaide Britton married Archibald Victor Otway. 25 Dec 1924 • Shoreditch, London.
They don't appear to have had any children, well I can't find any. Perhaps because Archibald was a sailor and away at sea, he last served on Vivid I, Aug 1928, he died Mar 1968 • Yarmouth, Norfolk.
He was born in Norfolk so I would assume that he and Adelaide lived there but I am probably wrong.
Looking for children. Thanks.

Can you find them on the 1939 register?  That might indicate if they had children but bear in mind those children could still be living if born after 1924 so we cannot name them  :)

Did this Archibald remarry in Liskeard to Winifred R C Luby or Luly (indexed both in Jun qtr 1941 and Dec qtr 1942 - not sure what’s going on there)?

Hi avm228, I'm not sure of any thing with this lot with all the name changes. All I know about Archibald is that it seems that he was still in the navy up to at least 1940 when he got a long service award. Nearly all his family were and still are in Norfolk, I can't see him having any time to re marry as it looks like he was at sea most of his life.

Well there’s only one birth ever of an Archibald V Otway on FreeBMD, so I wouldn’t rule out too quickly the possibility that he is the person marrying Winifred Rhoda Charlotte Luly in Liskeard in the 1940s.  It looks as though they had a son in Plymouth in 1942.  Winifred (b 21.03.1909) died in Plymouth in 1983.

I don’t know.  Can’t see any trace of her after marriage.

Maybe they divorced?

Don't know if this is her marrying in Sep 1943 Exeter

Adelaide Otway to Alfred E Badge

Perhaps if we could find a death for Adelaide Badge and her age it might help to rule her out.

Oh I just clicked on the marriage record on Alfred's name and it says spouse

Adelaide Otway or Britton

Wasn't really expecting that!

Alfred Ernest Badge born 1907 Plymouth perhaps.

Stuck again after that  :(
