Title: Latin Help
Post by: Horsley2016 on Thursday 04 October 18 16:31 BST (UK)
Hello there,

I would resort to Mr Google but I cannot decipher the word after "ad fidem" on a baptism cert. Please can somebody more familiar with them be able to help? To me it reads 'conostra or anostra' I cannot get the resolution low enough to attach on here! Any thought please? It is written in a side margin under the address dating from 1872.

Thanks
Mx

I'm sure others better qualified will come along, but is it an adult baptism of a person converting to the faith, or an infant one?

Could it be 'converta' (= converted)? That would fit well with 'ad fidem' (= to the faith). However, it's hard to give a definite answer without seeing the image.

If you need it, there are some suggestions on posting images here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=130922.0

Or if this one is online somewhere, can you give us a link?

It's an infant one. The Father of the child had died that same year (7 months earlier.) The Mother subsequently remarried 4 years later, so I wondered if it was added later on and relevant to either of those points?

Thank you!

... the Mother did remarry from catholic to CoE in 1876 so perhaps she was born CoE. I don't have the birth details of her.

She's Mary Ann Morris married to Anton Frederickson. The daughter in question is Maria Frederickson born 13.Oct 1872. She was baptised at St Albans 21 Aug 1896. I don't know if that date makes it significant or not. All Liverpool based.

I've only just noticed the fact she was 24 when she was baptised???

 ???

So it's an adult baptism after all?  Looks like a conversion to Catholicism.

Could you post a link or post a snippet?

For those looking online the name is spelt Maria Fredericson in the baptism register.

" ad fidem conversa" = converted to the faith

I agree with 'conversa' (and I should have realised it would be that rather than 'converta'). Here's a snippet:
