Hi All

Attached is from the 1861 census in Calton I am looking for confirmation of the writing also what does it mean.


Only the writing contained within the box. Born North or South have spent many years trying to take my OHs family further back in time it pays to actually read the small print totally missed what is written here.

It says Porta Prince, St Domingo , West Indies , Naturalised British Subject

I Think it was intended to be Port-au-Prince? (Haiti)

I read that as
Porta Prince, St Domingo
West Indies, Naturalized British Subject
Ireland
So James, whowever he was, was born in what is now Port au Prince in Haiti, not of British parents or he would not have had to become naturalised.

If I were you I would check the catalogue of the National Archives in Kew to see if they have his naturalisation papers. I got a huge amount of useful information from the naturalisation papers of Louis Charles Turunski, who was naturalised in 1846.
