I am trying to discover some information about John MacInnes and his wife Annabella MacAskill from Onich in the West Highlands of Scotland who went to San Francisco in 1910. Annabella appears in the 1930 census and she is a widow living in the house of Jennie Coppage (Enumeration District 144 in San Francisco). In the 1940 census Annabella is an inmate in the Laguna Honda Relief Home. Annabella died in October 1941. Might anyone know where Annabella would have been buried which in turn might tell me where her husband was buried or when he died. John MacInnes was the Registrar of births deaths and marriages in the village of Onich before he went to the USA and he was also the man who designed the Clan MacInnes tartan. Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have John's year of birth?
-
1940 census also says Anna was divorced.

Do you have John's year of birth?
Born 1851 according to this article -
He was Registrar for Ballachulish and Corran of Ardgour between the years 1874 and 1920.

Is there any evidence that John came to the US? Or a passenger list with his wife's arrival? That might shed some light on whether they came/stayed together or not.
There is a possible entry for Annabelle in the naturalization index - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-DWHF-4?i=1009&cc=1849982 The actual papers may mention whether John was alive or still her husband.
If nothing else turns up regarding Annabelle's place of burial, the San Francisco Public Library will do free obituary look-ups. https://sfpl.org/pdf/libraries/main/mnc/obituary-request-form.pdf

Thanks everyone for your replies. I know all about John and his wife before they left Scotland as he was part of my maternal family tree. The local newspapers here had an advetisement in 1910 when he was selling of all his household belongings before heading off to the USA. When his widow died her death notice appered in the local paper. I am not convinced they were divorced !,
Thank you for the link to the library and their look up service.
"Tartan John" as he has come to be known in the family is certainly a man of mystery as we have no idea why they decided to go to San Francisco.
Thanks agian

There definitely seems to be some conflict between the info that he was a Registrar until 1920 and he was leaving in 1910. Is there any way to verify his position as Registrar after 1910? Any sign of them in the 1911 Scotland census? Or other mentions in the local paper past 1910?
It also seems odd that people would pack up and go halfway around the world at age 60+ unless they were going to someone or trying to get away from something. Any other family members of theirs in the US?
-
I think I've found them crossing from Canada to the US in 1910 :
John McKinnes 49 merchant Scotland , last permanent residence Inverness
Anna Bella McKinnes 48 wife
nearest relative in country whence came : Rev McKaskill , the Manse , Onich
arrived Quebec 3 Jul 1910 , going to San Francisco
Passenger list :
John A McInnes 49 merchant
Mrs A B " 48
dep Glasgow 25 Jun 1910 on SS Southwark , bound for Quebec.
The corresponding arrival record gives no extra details.

There is a declaration of intent for John Alpine MacInnes born Scotland 16 Jul 1860 Invernesshire, dated 1917. He is living in Oakland , California , his wife , Annabella, is living in Santa Cruz. He is employed as a night watchman. The record mentions emigrating on the SS Southwark in 1910 , as mentioned earlier.

Here is a John "N" Mcinnes , born Scotland 1861 , living in Oakland , California in 1920. He is divorced and arrived in 1910. It seems to fit with the other records :

-
Is this John Mcinnes ?
John McInnes 7 Feb 1851 Ballachulish , parents John McInnis and Mary Cameron
If it is the right one this death record could fit :
John McInnes born 11 Mar 1862 , parents McInnes and Cameron ,died 23 Jan 1955 ( ! )
Siskiyou, California
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPWM-W5Z
Found this man on the census in Siskiyou , a miner who emigrated in 1886 , so not the right one.

Ah , that's more like it . Thanks Sandra :)
-
Thank you so much for that Christine. That is certainly them on the passenger list. Rev MacAskill was Annabella's brother. Strangely enough, this afternoon I was visiting the family who live in the house where Tartan John lived before he left Scotland.
Thanks again.

The border crossing says John was going to join his brother-in-law in Santa Cruz. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99D3-YKC5?i=3415&cc=2185163

Sorry -I didn't scroll down to see the rest of the comments.
So they were divorced after all - very interesting.
I'm not sure about the death -maybe the age given was wrong. He was definitely born in June 1850 and was the son of Dugald MacInnes and Jean McAlpine.
-
There is a death notice for Annabella in the Santa Cruz newspaper - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mtl/ Internment in the family plot in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
-
The birth year was given as 1861 on that 1920 census - seems a coincidence that he was in
Oakland, Alameda and the death record age 60 was in Alameda. Coincidence ???
It is not uncommon for ages to be wrong on census, depends who gave the information or was he trying to make himself younger :-\

Thank you Shellesq - you have given me some other names to look at.

Many thanks again to everyone who has responded to this enquiry about "Tartan John". It seems he kept making himself 10 years younger after he crossed the Atlantic. Fascinating details about him such as "part of his left ear was missing". Now that i have a date for his death I can search the local newspaper here in Scotland to see if there is an intimation of his death.
Thank you all
