Hi
After a recent hard drive replacement, cursor has become erratic, jumping around, opening new pages, and often disappearing. Text appears elsewhere in the document. Some symbols appear different to what they should be. This happens when typing in word, emails, and passwords but in particular, spreadsheets where the tab button often freezes.
I have found a CNET forum for laptops which recommends a TouchFreeze download but this site's domain is now for sale and the forum is over 2 years old.
Some other advice found suggests disabling the touchpad but this did not help. I have also tried using a mouse but this did not help either.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem on my 'other' laptop ..its just a cheap compaq q so I struggled and struggled with text going where it wanted to and in the end.. just put the lap top away.
I had tried all sorts of online help ! and was going to go to a computer man.. but ran out of patience with it and replaced it from an online auction site for very little money. cheaper than repairing it actually.
at the moment this one is being good :)

Be very careful. I found TouchFreeze dot com and dot net, which worried me, but I don't know what the utility is meant to do apart from "TouchFreeze is a free and simple utility for Windows that automatically disables the touchpad while you are typing in text." I'm not sure that that is what you want.
Have you tried shutting down and restarting? Have you checked the cursor speed settings? It is sometimes easy to change the cursor speed settings from different mouse buttons if you have a multi-button mouse. Are you actually using a touch pad? Also check by turning the keyboard upside down and shaking it that there are no blockages such as lunch or fluff under the keys. Try hoovering the keyboard as well. If you are using a mouse, check that the ball (if it is an old one) is moving freely, and that nothing is blocking the sensors if it is a newer one.

Have you tried resetting the touchpad?
just search for Cursor
Or see if running maintenance programs such as cleanup, checkdisk or defrag finds a problem?

I tried Touch Freeze it was useless.
The only way is to learn to type with your hands and wrists well clear of the touch pad, which is very difficult at times. Drives me mad.

Do you not have F6 key?
That disables Cursor.
Press again to enable!
