Title: O'REILLY CAVAN
Post by: aakarlhamo on Sunday 07 October 18 11:45 BST (UK)
Hi

My Ancestry DNA highlighted my birth father's family, I was adopted out as a baby.  It also showed that I am more Irish than I am English  ;D ;D

I am discovering that it can be quite hard researching Irish ancestors so I am hoping that someone can help me open up his family and maybe go back further.

My GT Grandfather was Edward O'Reilly abt 1855 Cavan and his wife Margaret abt 1857 Leitrim - sorry no surname. I have nothing apart from the 2 documents below:

Edward was a farmer according to the 1901 and 1911 census:

1901 a farmer living  at 8 FAHANGRAVE, ARVAH, CAVAN with wife Margaret and 4 children, neice Maggie Curran 24 Leitrim, 3 visitors and 4 servants.

1911 a farmer living with his wife, 4 children, 4 servants and 2 borders at Rahaghan Ave Cavan.

Kate O'Reilly  is my grandmother and she married George McKeon.  Her part of the tree is pretty much resolved.  Kate and George moved to Enfield and the family are picked up on the 1939 Register.

Thank you
Carole :D

Doesn't quite fit does it because the name is Reilly rather than O'Reilly, she's a Mary rather than Margaret or Maggie, the date is out too as are there ages all by a bit?

I feel out of my depths here as I am not familiar with anything - names or places

What do you think?

Cavan is the Poor Law Union/Registration district for Farrangarve (spellings do vary)- Killeshandra is the civil parish.

Patrick James Reilly born 3 Mar.1897 Farrengariff, parents Edward Reilly & Maggie Morrow- LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1897/02137/1811644.pdf)

Catherine born 18 Mar.1891- parents Edward Reilly & Margaret Morrow- LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1891/02398/1894136.pdf)

Does the birthdate you have from 1939 register match the above birthdate?

Marriage of Edward Reilly & Margaret Morrow took place 1 Sept.1884 in Mohil district (Co. Leitrim) which fits Maggie Reilly's birthplace in 1901 census- LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1884/10911/5985796.pdf)

If this is the correct parents for your Kate O'Reilly then you now have townlands and fathers' names.

Thank you very much aghadowey.  I have just checked the dates for Patrick and Kate and they appear to fit.  That's a great help :D

There's what looks to be at least one very detailed tree on Ancestry which shows Kate O'Reilly born 1 Nov.1888 Bellmullet, Co. Mayo, with parents Patrick H. O'Reilly & Mary Little.

If this is your Kate O'Reilly and those details are correct then all the above details posted on this thread are a waste of time  however, some of the tree details don't look accurate either.

For example, Kate is in 1901 census in "Arvagh, Co. Cavan" and "Fermoy Urban, Cork" and 1911 in "Rathdowney, Queens Co."

Fit what  ???  They fit the family found in 1901 and 1911 census posted earlier but see my reply about the online tree.

Also, again, what birthdate in on 1939 register for Kate?

Also... note he's Reilly when he married, not OReilly!

All perfectly normal!

Marriage of Kate O'Reilly to George McKeon gives her father as Patk Henry O'Reilly - LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1908/10075/5664746.pdf)

If you'd told us the marriage details at the start we wouldn't have wasted so much time tracing Edward O'Reilly, etc.). You should now find much of the Irish details you are looking for on Irish Genealogy, National Archives, etc.

It is the 1939 Register for Enfield and Kate O'Reilly is married to George McKeon.
Kate's DOB is Nov 1888

Which does NOT even come close to fitting with family you had us searching for earlier  ::)

Please don't get angry at me.

I have used the details from my cousin's tree and there was no record giving the name of Kate's father. Hopefully, now that the wrong father's name has been highlighted and I have the correct one then hopefully the correct records with come to light when searched.

I do appreciate the help that you have given me and mistakes do happen!

Thank you again :)

Now you know the error of relying on someone else's "tree".....  ;D

Don't mind me I'm just amusing myself, you probably have all this by now.
So in 1911 they are in Queen's County
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Queen_s_Co_/Rathdowney/Moore_Street/785539/
and George is in the Barracks as he is an RIC officer
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Queen_s_Co_/Rathdowney/The_Square/785586/

Kate's family in Mayo in 1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Belmullet/Barrack_Street/708007/
1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Belmullet/Barrack_Street__Belmullet/1580096/

George in 1901, I'd say
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Keshcarrigan/Drumaleague/1485420/
and the family in 1911, although someone is playing silly with the ages

be sure to look at the originals by clicking on the links in blue, you can learn things like the type of house they lived in etc.
