Hi...I have an idea when this was taken but would appreciate opinions please. I am between two decades and wondered what others thought.
Thanks for looking.

I'm no good with dating pics, but on my gran's (b 1900) school photo, the little girl in the centre is holding a small blackboard with the school name and date. What a brilliant idea is that? ;D
-
Hi Carol...Yes it is...I have a couple like that too. Shame it's not on this one though.

I've seen a couple with clothing like that in the 1930s, Carol, but not sure some boys have a pin behind their ties which suggest 1920s :-\
I expect Jim might give a better estimate.
Added - those boots would suggest the earlier date!
-
Hi Gadget... I was of the same opinion as you. I might ask Jim to take a look...I would like it to be 20s as my Uncle could be on it.
Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.
Added: I'm leaning towards 30s the more I look at it.

I was at school in the 1950's and we all looked very much like that. The relaxed poses indicate a date later than the 30's so I would go for 50's or early 60's.

Is there a wreath and white lilys in photo. Maybe taken at end of ww2

I think its very much earlier than the 1960's. I don't ever remember seeing boys in the 60's or the 50's wearing the sort of boots the boys at the right-hand end of the front row are wearing!
-
Definitely pre WW2. I can remember from late 1940s onwards :-X
1920s here:

I don't think it's as late as that AJ...I think I can see some Knitted ties and I associate those with the 30s but I could be wrong, but thanks for your suggestion.

Yes Jen I'm inclined to agree with them not being worn in the 60s but I do remember seeing some boys wearing them in the late 50s but not necessarily the same style. One lad I knew would wear "Hob Nailed" boots to school and used to chase me, and kick me in the shins :-\ but not sure if they were the same style as seen in the school photo.

That's a great link Gadget but I think mine is a bit later...but not much. Thanks for your input.

I think 1920's is about right. Gadget mentioned the tie pins & although they were worn on & off over a period of time post war-1920's was the most popular.
Is there a stamp box on the back ?
-
Aw thanks Jim..that's great....I was between the two decades but wasn't sure which...the stamp box is a plain triangle.
Thanks for your help :-*

Yes...you can tell the difference between this photo and mine...thanks again G. :)

I thought the 1930s one looked a bit too neat and tidy ;D
-
Yes...I noticed that too.

My first secondary-school photo was taken in 1945-6 and we looked very like the boys seen here. Younger lads (maybe up to around 14) often wore boots, and knitted ties were common until long afterwards.
It all seems very casual - some wearing caps, some not. I wonder if it could have been taken during WW2? I would guess either then, or late 1930s.
A pity it's boys - had it been girls it would have been easier to date!
Harry.
-
Thanks for your interest Henry but I was originally of the opinion that it would have been taken in the 20s or 30s, however..Gadget has shown images of school photos taken in the 20s and 30s which helped us to arrive at a 20s date which was confirmed by Jim.
The photo was taken in a working class area still recovering from the ravages of war, so there would be a mix of clothing worn and no doubt quite a few hand-hand-me downs.
