Post by: kjmck on Monday 08 October 18 20:04 BST (UK)
Evening all,

Looking for any help locating the above Keren Ching and her husband Edward. She married Edward May on 2 February 1815 in Surrey. It's a very unusual name!

Cheers,

Keelan

Do you know anything else about them - are they on the 1841 census or have they died before then?

I am having trouble locating them in Census returns but have just found this

MAY, KEREN  HAPPUCH MICHEL    71     Order
GRO Reference: 1862  J Quarter in DARTFORD  Volume 02A  Page 157

And also found this too, unsure if she is a Daughter of Edward and Keren.

MAY, KERERHAPPUCH       13     Order
GRO Reference: 1846  S Quarter in OF YORK IN THE CITY AND COUNTY OF YORK  Volume 23  Page 543

Although unlikely as Edward & Keren had a daughter, Keren Amelia May born 1815, who married Decimus Sewell.

1851?

Edward May 61 iron merchant
Kiron H May 59 born Launceston Cornwall
Augusta May 28
Emily Ching May 23
+ 3 servants

2 of the witnesses to the marriage in 1815 have the surname Ching

Keren-happuch is a biblical (Old testament) name, usually hyphenated like so, but could be spelled as a single word if you are searching for her name.

Baptism of Emily Ching May 1825 mothers name is Kerenhappue, probably should be as the above post suggests.

1861 Erith Kent

Edward J May 41
Keren H M May 68 mother widow still born Lauceston Cornwall so that must be her origins
Augusta May 36
Emily C May 31

The death you have found in 1862 looks about right

So Edward May must die between 1851 - 1861.

 It's a very unusual name!

A fair few in Lancashire and Yorkshire mid 19thC, possibly wives & daughters of miners from Cornwall.
1st part of name was sometimes spelled/transcribed Karen/Kiren/Kuren.
