Have you looked for him on 1901 or 1911 Census?

Yes 1911 census has him living in keady as a boarder - occupation tailor and place of birth dublin. i just havent been able to find marriage cert for his parents of trace of other siblings or even records of him in dublin barracks to be able to shed any further light on family . . . .

There are workhouse records on one of the pay sites

There's an L E male age 9 born Dublin with Sisters of Charity in Cabragh
under Sister Margaret Galvin
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Castleknock/Cabragh/1268760/

children male and female under 14
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Castleknock/Cabragh/1268764/

classed as a workhouse but more likely a type of orphanage

Thanks Dathai - this has been a great help. Do you know if there are any online records available to find out more about his time in the workhouse?

So the father is listed at an address in 1901 as a boarder - 30.3 Church Street would this also have been a type of workhouse?

Just did a search on that site there are 2 records which i cant see but give birth range 1891/1893 for an Edward Loftus there are also other records for children born 1890s including a Margaret and Mary on that basis it looks good.

I was helping a friend out with his family tree recently and i  could only find his great grandfathers marriage and the family from that marriage on the census i had no idea of his parents or siblings till fellow Rootschatter Hasta stepped in

Hi Dathai

Do you think its possible this Margaret could be a sister of Edward's found in 1901 cenus? given that Balls yard is in same parish of StMichan's were the Edward and Mary married and had children - age ties in

Every possibility as she appears to be the only one of that name born in that time period.I cant find a marriage for the couple that she's with on the census and she may not be related and may possibly be a ''nurse''child from the workhouse.

Ahh found them Emily Moran is Emily Loftus dtr of Thomas so must be a sister to Edward snr
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1893/10599/5861149.pdf

possibly

note the strange comments on Emily's baptism she was born 1867

Possible scenario

Emily's baptism 1871 states her father is dead he was a protestant and mother a catholic

A Thomas Loftus died 1871 age 30 not yet viewable

Thomas Loftus jnr was also baptised Aug 1871 but there does not appear to be a civil cert for him but there is a civil cert for an Edward Loftus in 1871 which unfortunately has the wrong image showing.
Several times i have come across children being baptised in one name and registered in another in this case his mother may have changed her mind and called him Edward after her own father,   just possible.

I need a little help with handwritting  . . . .

I've uncovered an entry for an Edward Loftus at the north dublin workhouse date of entry 20th April 1900 but on the last column (date deceased or removed from workhouse) i can't quite make out what it says

https://www.findmypast.ie/search/results?datasetname=dublin%20workhouses%20admission%20%26%20discharge%20registers%201840-1919&firstname=edward&firstname_variants=true&lastname=loftus&yearofbirth=1892&yearofbirth_offset=2

I think it says " xxxxxxxxxxRoberts by order 24th May 1901 Mr Fagan R.C" but not sure about the first words? Can any one help.

I also found an entry for what i think is same family entering workhouse on 6th June 1901 for Edward (8yrs), Mary (7yrs) and Thomas (6yrs) what was Ormond Market and why would Mary have been sent to Sligo. Also is the entry of "to Police" meant for Edward and Thomas or for the entries either side - surely 8 and 6 yrs was way too young to be sent to a police training school??

Re reply 20    children being sent to a police training school   that would be more likely given over to police to be sent to an industrial school

possible for Thomas   St Joseph's Industrial School,Limerick age 15 born Dublin, usually held till age 16 and then placed with a suitable employer till age 18
