My Great Grandfather was apparently born in County Carlow on 21st March 1849, can anyone advise on where I start to look for records etc? We are intending to come over to Ireland to research our tree but need a starting point.

Religion?

Now there's a question, I cannot say I am sure but I know my mother was bought up as Church of England, how could I know?

Church of Ireland records for a number of parishes in Co. Carlow are on IrishGenealogy (https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/location.jsp?diocese=CARLOW+%28COI%29), for Catholic records try the National Library (https://registers.nli.ie/) which has images of Catholic registers.
Do you have a marriage record for your Great Grandfather ?
Do you know his father's name, was the church he married in Catholic or Protestant ?

Thank you for those tips, sadly I do not have the other pieces of information at this stage or I might have a clearer path

I'd suggest the next step would be a search for the marriage of your Great Grandfather, maybe starting in the area his children were born. If he married in Ireland after 1864 then there should be a marriage cert with fathers name, same details would be shown of marriage certs for many other counties, some parts of the world you would also get mothers name on a marriage record - e.g. Scotland.

Thank you, that's probably a good suggestion, I will give it a try, I am fairly sure they married here after he came over.

Hi,
Nearest one that I could find is baptism of a James Brophy on 11th March 1849 in Clonegal Parish to a James (?) Brophy and Janey(?) Walshe .Address given is Milltown and sponsors listed are Luke Brophy and Mag. Walshe.
https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000634446#page/137/mode/1up
If that's the person the other children baptised to same couple include;
John-31st August 1851
Thomas 12th December 1852
Ok after looking at opening post again.You are in USA/Australia I presume so Clonegal will mean nothing to you.Its a Parish on the Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford border.Think parts are in each county but not certain.
The above James is the only male Brophy born 1849 that I could find in Carlow and the baptism date is close enough but remember not to get fixated on stated date of birth or esp. the year given as it depends on the informant having the knowledge.Usually its more likely that date is correct but year is incorrect.
