Title: McCready - Errigal
Post by: kw1980 on Wednesday 10 October 18 21:16 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me find any information re McCreadys from Garvagh?

My great great Grandfather was John McCready B:1828. I assume he was born in Garvagh / Glennullin direction. He married Mary (o?) Crilly from Gorteade on 3 November 1857 in Maghera and Killough church. His witness was Pat McCready - maybe a brother?

I found a record from errigal parish of one of their children's baptism (Bridget B:1863) so I assume they lived in the errigal area unti their move to Swatragh by 1872 when their son Joseph's baptism was recorded in Maghera & Killough.

Any help very much appreciated.

For reference-
Joseph McGrady born 1872 Swatragh -LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1872/03253/2192110.pdf)

Swatragh isn't that far from Garvagh and being a labourer it may just be that the family moved around a bit in the same area. If you want to tray an pin down where they were living (and roughly when) then search through the online Valuation Revision Books (free)-

My goodness he's aged quite a bit in 10 years  :o Wonder if he applied for Old Age Pension (should list some details from 1841 or 1851 census is found)

Can't see anything in OAP files but you might have luck using more variations-

I think that's the reason I am having trouble tracing past john and mary, there are so many different variations of McCready.

I did a DNA ancestry test and my matches ( 4th cousin and beyond) are McCurdy. Not one match for McCready, mcgrady etc.

I really appreciate your help. I am still figuring this out.

This 1831 census site gives religious breakdown and scanned images- as you can see, most of the McCurdys in this area were Presbyterian- LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?searchMoreVisible=false&census_year=1831&surname=mccurdy&firstname=&county19011911=&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&barony=&parish=&ward=&townland=&houseNumber=&familyId=&ded=&age=&sex=&search=Search&ageInMonths=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&yearsMarried=&birthplace=&nativeCountry=&language=&deafdumb=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumber=&protNumber=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=)

You mentioned a DNA link to McCurdy surname- do you have any more details? I've got lots of McCurdy notes in my files.

Local McCreadys which probably don't help but will post just in case.

Mary McCready born 14 Aug.1865 Clintagh (parents William McCready & Martha Gibson)- not far from Shanlongford-

That Patrick McCready of Magheramore would have been born about 1841. Unfortunately the online Errigal registers start a bit later-
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0367

Here they are in 1911-

John was born late 1820's so Patrick at 1841 would be too young to be a brother?

The McCurdy matches I found by DNA are mostly 5-8th cousins located in USA, but there are lots of them. Seem to descend from a Daniel born 1677 in Scotland, married Margaret Laughlin born 1695 and both died in Northern Ireland.

The closest match to my DNA was 4-6th cousin called whose mother was Mckirdy from Scotland. She had hit a brick wall with that line.

Just had another look at my matches - Mary McCready clintagh in your link, did she marry a Hutchenson? Possible dna match with her.

No idea what happened to her but you can search for Hutchinson/McCready marriage-
