Title: Top hat / Clothing 1867
Post by: davecapps on Thursday 11 October 18 16:13 BST (UK)
just trying to work who this couple are. My only lead at the moment is what they are wearing.
Would the top hat or the womens clothes have any significance in 1867

I think so. Super photograph. Was he a farmer? See lower netherwear. He wasn't a labourer.

It's a stovepipe hat ;D
Taller than a top-hot, with straight sides.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_hat

That kind of hat was fairly normal, I think.
Check photos of I.K. Brunel or Abraham Lincoln! ;D

1860s fits nicely with the image...it looks like it is an ambrotype.

Sunday best?

The top-hat itself dates from circa 1796?
That wikipedia entry says:
Within 30 years top hats had become popular with all social classes, with even workmen wearing them.

What age do you think they are.
I have one couple that could fit. According to the 1871 census he was 48 and harness maker
That makes him 44 in 1867. He looks older to me

Tall hats did go back to just before 1800 but not like this one. The military followed the fashion in shako's. They're not gentry by any stretch, although he has a certain middling status. Have to wait for Jim 1, he'll know.
