The above person is of my Brother-in-law's family.He is given as born in Belfast in 1812.He is looking for his parents if possible please.

Religion?

Registration of births, deaths & Catholic marriages started 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages) so for earlier dates you need church records and there are LOTS of churches in Belfast.

When & where did he marry?

Thanks,he married a Mary Kirkwood in Co Down in 1838.

I've found that on the Birth of son Gordon in 1865,father's name is given as a William James McClenehan.

He married   Mary Kirkwood in Co Down in 1838 and you have Birth of his son Gordon in 1865, 27 years later??

Apparently those years are correct,Mary being quite young about 16 when she married.

Which leaves a lots of choices for church where he might have been baptised.

What record(s) show Belfast as birthplace? "Belfast" could easily mean the city itself or a large area surrounding it. (my Grandfather's uncle was born 1819 fifty miles west of Belfast but his 1890 obituary say h was born near Belfast).

Birth registration of son Gordon (1865) gives family at Tulnacross-

If the parents were married in 1838 then I would expect to find that they had quite a few children between those dates.

According several submitted LDS trees- Mary Kirkwood (mother's maiden name Gordon) was born c1822 of 1824 at Lambeg, County Down

or she was born 1817 according to this tree- husband William born 1812 Belfast & a son William born 1840 Belfast-

This one says married c1838 Belfast- with bride 4 years younger than groom which is typical LDS default as the marriage date is also likely to be-
