Thank you,Wendy2305

Helen and James were married 1903 Blythswood Lanark if you download the wedding cert it will gie you their parents names and the birth cert will also give you date of marriage for Andrew and Margaret as have found one but her name isn't McClure could the McClure have come from one of Helen's grandmothers
-
It could have done,I didn't think of that.
-
I think Margaret’s maiden name is actually Galt. There is a birth in 1871 for Margaret Richardson daughter of Andrew Richardson and Margaret Galt which would match with the 1881 census which includes a Margaret age 10 born Glasgow. Andrew Richardson and Margaret Galt married in 1870 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow.
-
thanks,sounds like that's her
-
In 1871 Andrew and Margaret are living at 217 South Wellington Street, Glasgow. They have a two year old son John living with them. He appears to have been born as John Galt ( mother Margaret Galt) in Govan in 1869. All the census point to Andrew Richardson being born in Whithorn, Wigtonshire around 1844 and Margaret being born in Stranraer, Wigtonshire around 1845/46. Andrew is described variously as a Seaman/Ferryman
-
Do you think Andrew could have been Margaret's second husband?
-
Margaret Galt or Richardson died in Patrick in 1914 age 68. You can view both the 1870 marriage certificate and her death certificate on Scotlandspeople for a small fee and that should give the names of her parents. The marriage certificate would be the better one to view as that will also give the names of his parents and also confirm if she was a widow or not.
-
The 1914 death is indexed under Richardson Galt and Greig so she may well have been married previously.
-
Thank you for your help :)
-
I think I have found Margaret surname Greig living with her 40 year old mothe Jannet Greig in Stranraer in 1861. Jannet was born in Ireland.
-
That's brilliant, thanks.so her maiden name was Greig, then she must have married Galt?
-
There's a baptism of an Andrew Richardson 26 Oct 1848 son of Henry Richardson and Helen McClure in Whitmore
-
Perhaps, but John would have been shown as mothers maiden name Greig if that was the case and mother is actually shown as Margaret Galt ( no father) Also her marriage to Andrew would normally be indexed under Galt and Greig if she was a widow, and it is not. My feeling is that Margaret was born illegitimately as a Galt and that Janet subsequently took on the name Greig ( possibly by a subsequent marriage) and Margaret also then went under that surname. I have tried to find them in the 1851 census, but drawing a blank at the moment.
A Janet Greig or Galt died in Patrick in 1899, but she was 70 which doesn’t tally with the age on the 1861census.

and 1851 census in the Isle Of Whithorne , Whithorne Road
Henry 33 occp Ag Lab
Helen 31
Andrew 7
All born Whithorne
-
So McClure comes from Andrews mother
-
I’ve had a look at the 1870 marriage for you. It took place on 16th Feb 1870 at 63 Commercial Road, Glasgow ( given as home of both the bride and groom). Andrew was age 26, a bachelor, occ Seaman, Merchant Service. Father Henry Richardson, a Wood sawyer, Mother Ellen Richardson nee McClure.
Margaret was age 24, a Domestic Servant. Father John Galt, a Warehouseman, mother Janet Galt nee Greig.
-
have found a marriage of a John Galt to a Janet Greig in Whithorne although it is in 1865 on Family Search
-
There is a death of a John Galt in Partick age50 in 1879
-
John and Janet Galt are living at 63 Commercial Road in 1871 ( same address as 1870 marriage of Andrew and Margaret). Also living there are Henry and Ellen Richardson ( parents of Richard). There are other Galt children who look to be children of John’s first marriage to Jane Thompson.
So looks like Margaret was born Greig but took on her stepfather’s name.

Wow you have found so much!
