Hi
I have looked at this page and it makes interesting reading, but it is mainly about travel to New Zealand in the 1850's/1860's. Technology changed a lot between then and the 1920's in terms of cost of tickets and length of journey. There weren't so many immigrants, especially after 1928, so its hard to find this information.

Looking at page 9 of the Arawa's manifest they picked up a few passengers at Panama canal,so that was the route they took

regarding the route
the Panama Canal opened in 1914 and NZ Shipping Company vessels used that exclusively (I believe)
Shaw Saville and Albion I think continued to go Canary Islands - South Africa - Australia (dropping off at Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney then over to Wellington (I was a baby on one of those in 1957 - not that I remember it, but I've seen the photos! And it went that way)
Plus there was the Suez Canal route.
So you would need to know the vessel to try and figure the route they travelled.

Hi
Thank you all very much for your help. I believe they went to the North Island, so would that be Auckland or was Wellington the main port for immigrants?

I read a range of newspaper advertisements for 1928. My impression of Shaw Saville Albion was that they generally advertised "New Zealand via the Panama Canal" sometimes describing it as the "Direct route" with "Through Passenger Booking for Australian Ports".
Rates weren't advertised - those interested being advised "For particulars apply to..." followed by 3/4 addresses across the country.

Restrictions were imposed on the passage of assisted immigrants in April 1927 and still in place early 1929 eg
" ... restricted to separated families, limited number of domestics and youths emigrating under the auspices of such organisations as Flock House".
