I am having problems reconnecting my scanner to my computer after maintenance.
It's a Brother DSmobile 820w scanner and Mac running MacOS Mojave 10-14 (I upgraded hoping that would help but, no).
It appears to download from the Brother website and install but, upon opening for use says "incomplete or missing".
Suggestions appreciated.

If it were me.... I'd remove Scanner from list, then add it!

I'm with hallmark on that!
Uninstall the printer/scanner then after a reboot install as a new installation.

I wonder do you have the correct driver. It could be the present driver you have is not compatible with updated Os v10.1.4. You would have to match the driver to your particular model It should be a a TWAIN driver.

Have finally been informed by Brother that the driver for this will not be available until late October. Thank you for your trouble.

It worked before didn't it??
Must have had a Driver if it did.
I'd certainly remove it, then install it again but up to you!

Go to Hamrick.com.
He produces Vuescan.
The website will show whether your specific scanner will support it.
If it does go for it. Its FREE and is regularly updated.
Nice piece of software which as a long time user (Apples/Macs since 1977)

Read what it says - they are very confident it will work with Brothers - list lots but not yours... yet?
