Title: William Winnard
Post by: ehwinnard on Sunday 14 October 18 00:36 BST (UK)
I'm looking for William Winnard born in England 1794. I believe he came to America in 1817 on the ship the Martha. I have no prove but I believe his parents maybe Richard and Ann Winnard. if any one could help me I would be thankful.

What can you tell us about William after he arrived in the US.

What information do you have on James Winnard in case we can link them.

Hi

Quite a few trees on this family give an exact birthdate for William of 5 January 1800.

The Methodist Review of 1826 mentions Brother William Winnard in Culpeper, Virginia - William Winnard's marriage took place in Culpeper. I wonder if there was a movement of Methodists from England to America in the early 1800s which could be pinpointed ?

Thank you. I will see if I can find any thing on the Methodist. Would you know if there is any way to look up ships that left England in the early 1800’s.

Finding Arrival Records Online - Ellis Island
https://www.nps.gov/ellis/learn/education/finding-arrival-records-online.htm
This has a list of sources including some before Ellis Island became the reception terminal. Castle Garden predates Ellis Island immigration records. Edit. The link doesn't work. Search for the above title.

National Archives  - Immigration records

National Museums Liverpool  -  Maritime Archives & Library
www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/archive

The Ships List
www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists

It will be hit & miss searching for early 19thC records. Articles on U.S. National Archives website listed above,  National Archives at Kew and Liverpool Museum Maritime Archive information sheets give background.

Earliest records for both Ellis Island and Castle Garden begin in 1820 - since William Winnard arrived 1817 there are no passenger lists to view.
