Title: Welch family, Stoke Damerel
Post by: vapcq45 on Monday 15 October 18 13:01 BST (UK)
Hi - can anyone help me as I've got myself into a pickle trying to decide which birth parents belong to John Welch.

'My' John Welch (3rd Gt Grandfather) is a Shoemaker, married to Peggy (Eames).  All of their children were baptised at the Morice Street Wesleyan Chapel in Stoke Damerel.

I can see a John Welch b 7 Aug 1791 baptised 25 Aug in the Morice St. Wesleyan Chapel to a Thomas and Grace. (I've not been able to find a marriage yet).

I also see a John Welch b 1793 (which ties in with his birth date in the '51 and '61 census) baptised at Charles the Martyr, Plymouth, parents Anthony and Elizabeth.  I can see a marriage to an Anthony and Elizabeth Hotton.

To confuse the issue, there is a son, John Robert Hotton Welch b 3 Nov 1830 - baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel to a John Welch (Shoemaker) and Margaret and there is a John Welch on the '51 census with my John Welch and Peggy.

John and Peggy's marriage record (England Select) says John Welch and Margaret Eames 1819.

Any idea how to decide which are correct parents for my 3rd Gt Grandfather John Welch?

Thanks so much.

Val

Peggy is 'pet' name for Margaret

Beat me to it!

I would add that, although the Wesleyan baptism is most likely I would check deaths and any other baptisms for Thomas and Grace.  If they are not connected to Plymouth, I would be satisfied they are your John's parents.

Given that John and Margaret/Peggy included "Hotton" as a middle name for one of their sons, I'd have thought things were pointing towards Anthony Welch and Elizabeth nee Hotton for John's parents.

The census returns for John show as follows:

1841: 45, born in county (= 45-49)
1851: 58, born Plymouth
1861: 68, born Plymouth
1871: 78, born Plymouth

All of which (in addition to the "Hotton" point) makes the Plymouth baptism rather compelling.

3 March 1793: John, son of Anthony & Elizth Welch, said to be born April 30 1792

Thanks AVM228

But there is the compelling baptisms of John in the Morice St Wesleyan Chapel to a Thomas and Grace and he had all his children baptised at the same place...

Still not sure.
