Trying to trace Edna Florence Marie Leslie who married Henry Charles Ray, in Jubbulpore, India, xmas 1926, I believe, and her death, which may be India 1960's,70's
-
Do you mean you're trying to trace her origins, or just her marriage/death?
If you already know her birthdate (even if approximate) and/or birthplace, then it would help to have that information on the thread.
-
Was her husband the Henry Charles Ray who was baptised in the Catholic Cathedral, Agra, 29 May 1899?
He was born 26 May 1899 to Thomas John Ray (signaller, Govt telegraph dept) & Amelia Virginia, of Agra.
His death was registered in Enfield, Sep qtr 1981 - Henry Charles Ray, born 26 May 1899.
-
Hi
Yes that's him !!
Did you find her at all??
Regards
-
H C Ray, a doctor b abt 1899, came to England from his former residence India on the Corfu in June 1950. Future permanent residence: England. Proposed address in the UK: 331 Alexandra Park Rd, Wood Green, N22.
He wasn't travelling with any family members, and his marital status was not indicated.

-
H C Ray was a doctor - British Indian Army

Errol Charles Ray, 21, arrived at the port of London from Bombay on the Ranchi on 3 August 1949.
Occupation: Student.

-
So Edna F M - IS still in India - but is she traceable ?
-
Yes, that is Errol Charles Ray
-
Hi Annie,
We've never thought about initials switch round -
while it is possible we were always under the impression that she never left India
-
A possible with initials switched round?
1965 RAY FLORENCE E 76 ENFIELD 5B 309
Annie
This may be the Florence E Ray from the “wrong” Ray family found in the Enfield electoral rolls earlier in the thread (before we knew about Errol).
-
ok
-
I don’t know how you would trace a mid-20th century death in India, but others might.
Are there any further clues in family lore? Was the marriage rushed into because Errol was on the way, and repented at leisure?
Did Henry Charles Ray ever remarry?
-
Hi
No - Marriage Xmas, Jubbulpore, 1926 was 10 Months before birth of Errol Oct 1927 - but would still like to see her mentioned in the marriage.
Birth of Errol was Rangoon where HC was stationed, at that time
again can't find her mentioned at his Errol's birth, only HC mentioned
They were back in Jubbulpore, led to believe, when HC and EC left India, for good.
Was there any registration of people pre post independance ?
Can't trace her birth - assuming she's younger that HC - so after 1899
Thought she was to have involvement in army - nurse etc - but nothing
a complete mystery !

"Trying to trace Edna Florence Marie Leslie who married Henry Charles Ray, in Jubbulpore, India, xmas 1926, I believe, and her death, which may be India 1960's,70's"
Can you be specific as to how/where the info. on Edna was found if you have no paperwork for her?
Annie

The baptism record for Errol has been redacted by FindMyPast as his birth was less than 100 years ago.
I can check the full entry at the British Library this week.
I can't find the marriage online at FindMyPast but it is estimated that only 70% of the British India parish records were deposited before 1948, the remaining 30% are permamnetly lost or not deposited.
Records after Independence in 1948 are kept and maintained by the authorities in India.

Hi Dawnsh
Many many thanks for this - really appreciate it.
Best regards

I see that much of what we have found was already known to you from a thread elsewhere:

Have you got anywhere on Andrew Charles Leslie, the possible father of Edna? What’s the source for his name - is it an annotation on a photograph?
-
Hi
"Andrew Charles" was on a piece of paper along with a photo of Edna standing with an older man - purely speculation that it's her father's name

Can you please answer question below as this too seems to be "purely speculation"?

Hi Annie
You don't ask people questions or rather think to ask questions when very little is volunteered by the person.
I did meet Erroll.
But it was years later that I took an interest to find out more. As you do, I've spoken with those who knew him a bit better. People recall names etc
The person I really want to find is Edna, but she seems to be elusive
-
Hi Gerry
I've got the baptism for you. If you send me a pm with your email address, I will forward it on.
While I was at the library yesterday, I checked the Times of India Archive online in the reading room. There was no entry for their marriage, Errol's birth or a later death for Edna.
I also checked the index books of marriage and burial entries to see if there were any likely candidates in the variant spelling category as well as any missed entries correctly spelt. There weren't any.
What I'm suggesting is that the marriage and burial may have taken place at a Roman Catholic Church which has not or did not deposit its registers upon Independence in 1948 or did not complete and supply the quarterly returns which make up this collection.

PM sent
Many thanks for doing this
